Good idea.

I got kicked off about 3 years ago for using a nickname. I refused to send them any personal information. They wanted a picture of my drivers license and even mentioned being able to send some sort of bill to verify myself. No thank you. Took some getting used to at first, but now I don't miss it at all.

I am only on it because of my two DD's. They were very active on it back in the day. Now, not so much.

There were quite a few times when they were out of the country that FB was the way we could communicate for various reasons, so I am grateful to it for that.

What was supposed to simply be a way for friends to find each other or keep in touch has morphed into a site with multi-layers of problems.

Zuckerberg is eluding to having a pay to use site. I can see that in the future. Interesting to see what will go down with the investigation.

I am on facebook but only because we have a family group to discuss issues surrounding my mom. It's easier to communicate this way rather than make 4 phone calls to siblings and her brother (my uncle). Otherwise I don't use it.

I use it mainly for groups I am in. Younger people have left FB in droves. I use what's app and instagram to keep in touch with my kids. I have unfriended a lot of people lately due to their obnoxious posts, hypocrisy, or humble bragging. I don't need those irritations. I'm sure some family will figure out they can't message me anymore, ergo=unfriended, but I don't give a rat's *** The only reason I am friendly with them anyway is through marriage.

Never had any illusion about privacy on facebook. I think of it like a public bulletin board. I don't use the check-in feature, never given any app access to my contacts. Don't play any games or answer stupid quizzes that are designed to mine information for your security questions.
I like that it shows me what I posted on this day years ago. It is nice to be able to see what's happening with friends and family. I get information that I would otherwise have to go out of my way for! I do spend a lot of time blocking some of the shared websites that are too inflammatory...

Joined to see what it was years ago, and then a few months later tried to cancel my membership. I could not find a way to do that. So I still have an account that I do not check.

From the beginning, I couldn't see any benefit in posting safe, bland, impersonal information on a public site. If you want to talk to ME, not the world at large, send me an email or call me. I can keep a confidence.

Ditto to what Nycefarm said. Facebook is no more or less insecure than any other place on the web. If you don't want the world to have the potential to see it don't post it. It's really that easy.

I agree, Facebook is what you make it. As is any other public social media web site, including this one. While you have to join here to be able to post, anyone can read all the posts. And that is why I am so often amazed at how much information some people post.

I use Facebook to keep up with family members and friends who have moved away, and would probably have lost contact with otherwise. I also enjoy a number of the groups there, and the recipes and craft ideas.

I like Facebook. It's a great way to stay in touch and I have found old friends there that I thought I would never hear from again. I do wish people would not post so any pictures of their children. It's not safe and the child may later resent it. I no longer take any of those quizzes. I have my account as private as possible.

Chi: It seems like people care so much more about this Facebook data breach than the massive Equifax one.: Maybe people feel they can affect the FB breach more easily than the Equifax one, by opting out.

Note here. I am still on FB. I admit over the last couple years, when I tried to think about doing one of their quizzes, any time it said "data will be collected on you, your friends, and your location (etc.)" I opted out of doing said quiz. I actually started being savvy before that, and would save the URL for a browser that didn't visit my FB or other accounts, assuming I was really , really interested in the quiz. And answer there. Not many.

didn’t expect to see much. My profile is sparse, I rarely post anything on the
site, and I seldom click on ads. (I’m what some call a Facebook “lurker.”)

But when I opened my file, it was like opening Pandora’s
box.

With a few clicks, I learned that about 500 advertisers —
many that I had never heard of, like Bad Dad, a motorcycle parts store, and
Space Jesus, an electronica band — had my contact information, which could
include my email address, phone number and full name. Facebook also had my
entire phone book, including the number to ring my apartment buzzer. The social
network had even kept a permanent record of the roughly 100 people I had
deleted from my friends list over the last 14 years, including my exes.

There was so much that Facebook knew about me — more than I
wanted to know. But after looking at the totality of what the Silicon
Valley company had obtained about yours truly, I decided to try to
better understand how and why my data was collected and stored. I also sought
to find out how much of my data could be removed.

After reading this article, I used the download tool and it was quite eyeopening. I use FB very rarely; have maybe contacted 3 people directly in 10 yrs. I have nothing personal posted on FB, not a photo or birthdate, no employment or personal history. I have used FB to sign in on perhaps a dozen websites at different times - and in fact, there is one forum that I participate in that can only be accessed through a FB or Google log-in.

In just a 15-second look:

- 314 advertisers downloaded my contact info, including:

* Top Kickstarter Games - I never play games. Ever. On anything.

* HolyClothing - Never heard of 'em, and altho I buy clothing by mail, that's not a brand name or website I recognize.

* Tabletop Games Crowdfunding Videos

* John Chiang (Dem currently running for CA governor)

* Sears PartsDirect - Haven't dealt with Sears in 10 yrs since I bought one range from them.

* Americans for Prosperity - Florida. Sounds GOP or right wing. Not gonna win any votes from this lifelong Dem. Note my info was also downloaded by the same organization but from Mississippi, Alaska, Arkansas, Montana, Nebraska, New Jersey, New Mexico, Kentucky, New Hampshire, North & South Dakota, Georgia, Tennessee.

* AFP Foundation - Mississippi. Umm.....Mississippi?!? Seriously? The furthest South I have gone in the US is New Mexico, LOL.

* Chandini Chowk. No idea.

* Jewel-Osco. Could have sworn they aren't in CA at all, but who knows?

* IPad Pilot News. We have no Apple products at all.

* Affordable Pharmacy Action Network. No need, we belong to Kaiser which provides all medications for $10 a refill. All of them - no exceptions.

* A New Missouri. Don't care about the old one, and won't be visiting the new one either, LOL.

* New England Regional Council of Carpenters. Oh, I loved this one....don't live in NE, hardly ever visit (2x in 35 yrs) so why would I need a carpenter?

* Protect Dialysis Patients. Sure thing....just explain to me, exactly what are we protecting them FROM?

* Pennsylvania Coalition for Civil Justice Reform. I'm all in on this one, too. Do they let Californians vote for reforming Pennsylvanians? Ah, such power!

Okay, I'm being rather facetious here; but you must admit, you'll probably find some equally strange names in YOUR Facebook records if you use their "archive download" tool!

Artemis, maybe. I see what you're saying - there's limited actions that the public can do about Equifax, while deleting Facebook is a statement. But it just seems weird to me that people seem more worried about the data that Facebook has on them than identity theft or fraud. It seems to be getting far more media attention.
