finished period subways/hex floor shower: pics!
Comments (12)Thanks Bill, will do. Do you find ordering on-line is cheaper than ordering locally? I guess that's a difficult question depending on the area of the country where you live. I live in the deep South. Sometimes it is, sometimes it isn't. One way or the other, I'd still check both places. since I'm recreating flooring fromm years gone by, would the unglazed hex be more realistic to the period? Absolutely. Then again if I get unglazed I would definitely have to seal it, wouldn't I? Nope. Unglazed mosaics are made of porcelian, and you don't seal porcelain. I also want to think that maybe unglazed 4" with the glazed dots or whatever it is the little tiles that go in the corners are called, would look really nice. What say you? That would look just as nice, and still be period acceptable. This is a 12x12 marble version:...See Morecarrara hex tiles on shower floor won't dry out
Comments (91)I feel for you, Marjie. It sounds like you have a leak that you need to address. But with only one full bath in the house you cannot afford the time for the whole shower pan construction. I bought my house in February, and they started the construction right away. I am still waiting for a few final details to be done, not to mention the correction for the shower problem. But at least we had a basement to live in while it was going on (complete with full bath!). Btw, our tub downstairs is that all-in-one construction (fiberglass? acrylic?), which I know isn't the dream shower you were probably thinking of, but one could probably be installed in a day or two without any tile work since it goes up the walls. It has nifty ledges on it. I'm curious what our pros on here think of that type of solution. You could still have a beautiful tile floor which wouldn't have the same waterproofing concerns. I spent a lot of money of my master bath, and I love my design, but the aggravation has not been worth it. And there is still no consensus on what is wrong, or the proper fix. Oh, and another thing. I prefer my new $36 shower head in the basement to the $500 one in the master bath that is too hard for me to turn the settings for the jets because my hands are too small. It wasn't like I got to see it before he installed it. This one does everything my expensive one does except that it doesn't have the slide bar: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00JV5HO3G?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00 Actually, it does more. You can run the rain shower head and the hand held at the same time....See MoreNeed help in bathroom floor tile choices
Comments (29)Zaz and Beth, I finally have some samples on my floor to look at (from the Tile Shop) and that's helpful, but it's a pain in the b*** to figure out what samples to order and from whom to order them - and expensive too! I could probably order an equal number of interesting samples from Merola/Home Depot, not to mention the additional ideas you've both now given me, but at some point I need to stop. Even though I feel I've 'narrowed' my focus to something with blue and/or patterned-moroccan-style, there are still so many options and resources to look at. I do like all the additional examples you gave me, Beth. Is EliteTile considered a good quality resource? I have felt comfortable having a retail face to consult with (Tile Shop and Home Depot) but if you and Zaz and others with more experience feel it can be ok to order from a place like Wayfair and this brand of tile, then I feel more confident about that. Both Tile Shop and HD have nice options too, but I've been a bit frustrated that I haven't been able to see an actual sample of a large-size cobalt option .... and the nice on sale lantern blue one is beautiful. What a price, too!! Weirdly, as I look more closely at the Wayfair/EliteTile Moroccan tiles, I'm seeing several that are the exact same patterns that Merola/HomeDepot offer. Do either of you know anything about this? I'd kind of like to add pictures of the samples I have from Tile Shop to see what you both think, but it might need to wait until tomorrow since this day is over and I'm beat. (Also, have other things in addition to tile shopping which I'm sure you both can relate to.) I am grateful to have both of you to converse with on this. Feel more comfortable....See MoreNeed help in bathroom floor tile choices
Comments (7)I totally understand your concerns about maintaining congruity with the era of the house. My personal feeling is the the mix of old and new is what makes design interesting. I'm not a fan of walking into say an all modern room in a vintage home. It's jarring. But intentionally integrating a modern element into a more traditional space can be the spark that "makes" it. So, for your bathroom, the larger hex can be a "riff" on the classic tile - that updates it while playing homage to the house's era. At the same time, the use of a solid blue on the floor is already a more modern use of the material. So you could go with a smaller blue hex rather than the larger. I would choose your grout very carefully. I personally don't like a ton of contrast between the tile color and the grout. It just looks really busy to my eye. I also am imminently practical and would never put white grout on a floor. Something in the medium gray range would probably work best but I would have your tile installer make you up a couple sample boards once you get to that point. Smaller hex in a solid color: Grout similar to tile color:...See Morejillianfl
