Trees too close to garden or just bad soil?

Cookie8

I put in my garden when we moved in our house 12 years ago. I dug up the soil (high in clay) built a small brick wall 3" around, added about 20 yards of garden soil, each year I add approx 3 compost units of compost and find I don't have much luck in the vegetable department. I have two large silver maples approximately 10 ft from the garden edge (15 feet away for the 2nd maple). Feeling a little frustrated and was thinking maybe the trees are the problem? It gets plenty of sun as the trees are to the north of the garden. Or is it probably still my soil? Thanks.
