Looking for passionate bird watchers!

Hello friends of the bird watching/birding community. My name is Olivia, I'm a university student and I study Computer Science. I have been passionate about all kinds of animals, especially wildlife and birds since a child, I would often go spotting for birds with my dad and this sparked a real passion that I still hold to this day.

I am currently building an interactive web application as part of my university project for the bird watching/birding community which will offer the option to submit and other user's data on bird sightings. I will be including features like maps and graphs to help display the data aswell as the option to view and search the reported sightings. The motives behind my project are to give the community a place to collaborate, find popular areas for sightings of specific birds and finally to contribute data to the wider knowledge of bird conservation efforts.

I am developing this for the community so the input of real members of the community would mean a lot to me. If you would like to contribute your own sightings to this project, there is an option to leave your e-mail address and I will contact you with instructions but this is completely optional.

I hope this isn't against any rules to post, please do let me know if it is as I want to be respectful. I'm not looking to make any money off of this or profit, this is just something I want to work on out of a personal passion and offer to the community as a free online resource.
I am also aiming towards contributing my collected information to bird conservation efforts. I will be developing this solo for my university project but I plan to continue development into a fully fledged web application and am looking to work with bird conservation organisations as partners in future.

hey donna, I'm in south Texas, very hot weather already this is tthe first year I get Orioles so I'm very excited about it. I saw the female do it again, so I will be looking for a shady spot this afternoon to move my HB feeder and I will be putting orange slices for her.I have so much action going on in my back yard today, one of my feeders is right by a window so I've been abel to see the hummingbirds pretty close, and they are curious, they look straight at me. I saw one with a red chest and one with a purple chest. green on the back, I saw two duller lookng ones , I don't have time to search for them on the internet but first thing tomorrow morning.

Congratulations! Sounds wonderful, good luck with the photos, I know how disappointing it can be if they come back out of focus. Once you have the pics, either have your 1-hour folks make you a digital picture CD or scan your prints into your computer. Go to Photo Bucket and create an account. It's free! Then follow the directions there to upload your pics from your computer. When you come back here to start a thread and share your pictures enter this code into the Message: window... Gldno, great photo; what kind of camera are you using? Count me in as another birdwatcher/birdfeeder, though like Mimi, I don't set the table year round. At Thanksgiving I start putting out black oil sunflower seeds in several tube feeders and will also hang suet or tallow if it's really cold. I take them up by St Patrick's. We have many mature trees and several shrubs around the house as well as a number of boxes and birdhouses and I've noticed that fighting over the feeders interferes with nest building. So, I'm happy to help out in the winter, but once it's spring, they're on their own. I only feed BOSS; the Finches like it as well as the considerably more expensive Thistle, and I figure if the birds are just hankering for corn, they can (and do) flit down among the chickens for a little scratch. Our Grandson usually makes a couple of peanut butter pine cone bird feeders each year for Christmas too. Have you done Cornell's Great Backyard Bird Count? It's a four day, nationwide event that consists of individuals simply looking out their window and counting how many birds (and what species) are hanging around. You don't have to count from your home; anywhere you see birds is good. You can spend as little as 15 minutes on one afternoon, or several hours each day if you have the time. You fill in a different report for each day which is why there are two reports for Bowlegs, although I was the only person participating. I'd like to change that this year, and get the local school science class or at least the 4H group involved. We live on a farm with a good pond, surrounded by open fields and woods that sits at least a half mile from the nearest house, so we have a nice diversity of native birds all winter, everything from Roadrunner and Turkey Vultures to Juncos and Goldfinch.
