which is first? siding or cedar trim around windows/doors?

LP smart siding will be installed. We are staining rough red cedar to go around the windows and doors. Which one gets put on first? thanks!

Whenever you have a question about a specific product it is always better to contact the manufacturer for the correct answer. That said, the trim goes on first when installing lap siding.

Cedar has an inherent problem accepting and retaining paint. A friend has a home built during the 1880s. It is magnificent, but the exterior is entirely cedar. The last time it was painted was two years ago and the crew used SW Resilience. I'm not yet able to tell how well it will hold-up, but at least it covered the cedar. We talked to someone at FPE who said that they had no FPE-certified painters in our area, but, of course, recommended that as the best paint for her purposes. These comments are all very helpful. Thank you. While you were writing these comments, we were meeting with a contractor who is going to address some omissions with the board and batten siding and flashing. He too, concluded that fixing it with pieces of mahogany would be best. I like the idea of the caulk for deep voids as well. We have some leftover trim from the door install (pieces that are are different than the casing). I will go and see this base trim and see if we can fashion some from what we have leftover. Todd -- LOL. I think you are correct that we will never see the mason again as he has been paid in full.

I've seen many homes on Houzz that combine lap and board and batten. I think it looks attractive and I think very appropriate for your house's design. I did a mock up using limestone form a picture on Houzz. It is rather pink. I don't know what yours will look like but it is an approximate. I think sage will looks good with limestone and the dark windows. The sill area is small, so whether you paint it sage or not would make a difference. If you don't use sage go with on of the coordinating colors, as long as they work with the limestone.

I have been looking for the answer on LP's website but can't find it. I have read online that the OLD way to install siding was to put trim on then butt siding up next to it. The new way is to always install siding first. However that is not on LP's website.

It looks to me that the siding should go first. Then the trim should go on top of the siding. Then water would have less of a chance to go between the two.

Thanks for your advice.
