Remodeling Design Dilemma Kitchens

Backsplash trends for behind stove and hood

We will be remodeling our kitchen in a few weeks. Off white raised panel cabinets, darker hardwood floors, stainless appliances, cream/gray quartz counter tops. We will be using 2x4 tumbled silver/cream travertine tile for the back splash. We would like opinions if we should keep backsplash the same behind the stove and hood or create some type of focal point there, as seen in picture examples. We would also then carry that design to a small dry bar area on the other side of the kitchen. Yes or no? Ideas for design if yes? Thank you!

I'm a bit tired of accent designs over a range. But if you do it, keep it simple....Like same color with change in pattern and use of trim pieces. But personally, I like simple backsplashes....with very little accent colors and designs.

Definitely would be smaller version of the tile or set diagonally with thin stone trim.

You put a sealer on the grout or stone on a regular basis. Think of it as waxing the car. The protection needs to be renewed over time. Ron

This is almost exactly like my old kitchen... too funny. But this is sort of the look we would have, except we would have no 6 inch base of the counter top material around the edge, just our back splash. My concern is the tumbled marble tiles may be too porous for use behind the stove, and if they stain, then it's a real pain to clean. Quarts on the other hand would be very easy and would act as a sort of "feature" behind the stove. Keep in mind also that I do not have a hood, just an OTR microwave with ventilation.

The idea is very close. How pretty yours is. Mine will be painted on the same tiles as the rest of the white backsplash and it will have an inch and a half wide pencil tile as a border. Do you mind telling me how large the mural is and how much space you had above the range to work with? That would help me a lot visualizing it. My entire height is 22 inches and I will have only one and a half inches on the top and sides. Do you have any problems with grease splatters? Do you seal it annually? Thanks so much for your help.

eam44, with respect, I would never wear a Chanel suit because that just isn't me, never has been, never will be. I do, however, wear my Gap jeans almost daily, and have for decades : ) ...And that is why I changed my mind about not doing a 'feature' above my range... I saw a gorgeous tile feature that I loved, perfect coloring, and it was 'me'. The feature tile is fussy, it sits inside an inset, which is arched, and we have a deck-mount pot-filler which is offset to the inset. And our granite is busy. Way out of trend, very dated, and utterly gorgeous in my eyes. I cannot wait to have the backsplash installed now. Prior, after endless seas of plain jane subway (and our backsplash will have subway tile, BTW), I was lukewarm to despondent over the backsplash choices I had seen. meluky, if staying on trend is important to you (and that's fine if it is), don't put one in. If, however, it would make you smile every time you walked into your kitchen, and you didn't plan to sell your home in the next year or so, put one in. I agree with Momofthree Ma, "Do what you love".

Skip the tile accent. It's a dated look that costs more money and only interrupts the flow of a kitchen.

I like the minor change in a box if there is a big traditional carpentry hood. I prefer plain tile all the way up if there is a metal modern exposed hood.

Most of the time, a special design behind a range is a dated look. It can be pulled off depending on the design and the rest of the kitchen. Definitely don’t have the design behind the range within a tile “frame”. No one can pull that off since 2006.

I’d also think hard about a travertine tile backsplash. Also a bit dated, but that’s not why I ask you to look into it some more. Travertine is a very porous stone. The porosity means it will etch easily. In addition, travertine is naturally filled with tiny holes. The travertine tile will come from the factory with the holes filled with epoxy so that the tiles are smooth. Over time, that filler will fall out little by little. You can get the holes filled in again, but think whether that is something you want to deal with.

Here is a nice, no-box look that even has a carpentry hood. I like a nice tile, just skip the box and keep it all one type of tile for the whole area.
