I live in SWFlorida and I have been growing both queens wreath and sky vine for five years and love them both. Earlier comments regarding the need for constant pruning of the sky vine are correct but if you have the time the resulting blooms are worth it. One plant covered an eight foot section 4 feet high of chainlink fence and provide a wonderful color display when in bloom and a nice green wall when not. I built a 4 foot ladder trellis for my queens wreath and planted on plant at each end. Within two years the woody vine climbed to the four foot top a spread out across the eight foot long ladder. It now blooms about every three to four months and it is the one plant that I have that everyone who sees it in bloom raves about. Two great plants either is great but the wreathed is a definate show stopper.

I know this is an old post, but I'm updating. I had a discussion with someone on this subject just yesterday. He was saying that they are showing up and wanted to know what to do about it. I told him that once they get big the best way is the two-brick method. Well he was completely disgusted by that. So I told him that he might try pesticide if they are small and he's against pesticides. So I told him that my method is to keep on the lookout in the Spring for the babies when they hatch out and then I do my tribal stomp dance on top of them and no more worries. He was aghast at that idea. So I said well I don't know what to tell you to do then. He said he will just pluck them off and gently toss them over the fence. (Don't adult lubbers know how to climb fences?) I love nature and critters, etc. but when they encroach on my food crops and Mother Nature doesn't use it's natural resources to dispense with them, I then become the prosecutor and the judge. The way I see it, some of the ways that Mother Nature takes out critters using other critters is far more brutal than a quick smush with my foot and then it's over.

yukichan, thank you :) It is indeed Epicattleya El Hatillo - bought it a few years ago at Lowes or HD as a bagged seedling. This plant needed way too much light to bloom... What is my orchid growing situation like...well, orchids are "the main crop" in my yard (main obsession, that is) All outside, with no greenhouse. A variety of species, under the oak, under the grapefruit tree and all over the yard. A lot of my orchids came from bagged seedlings... If you are asking about this particular orchid..It is in a plastic pot with lots of holes, rocks on the bottom, and the rest - sphagnum moss. I have not repotted in a while, so it is just a mass of roots, and not much moss in comparison :) Olya
