What to put above bed?
Comments (25)I would like something above the bed, but I think I'd prefer a grouping of 2 or 3 paintings or prints or a triptych to a single short and wide image. Maybe it's just the feel of looking out a high slit window that doesn't seem master BR cozy to me. The same artist as the one you posted does a triptych and since they are custom, you could get the size and colors you like -- send her the photo of your room and let her help you chose the colors to work perfectly in there (maybe some silver highlights to play off the nightstands without adding more mirror and softer contrasts than the one you posted). That link led me to this artist The painting is a word in braile and you could have something that has a special meaning to you and it still has that soft organic feel. She also has some with color(s) in the background. One other thing I thought about was Sticks and Stones. They do architectural photography series to create name or word of your choice. You have multiple options for each letter. I did our last name for DH at Christmas and was very happy with it. I put the link below for you. The square pillows are good colors, but the pattern seems a bit strong. Not terrible and may become more balanced with art on the wall and a throw on the bed, so I wouldn't rush to change, especially if you like them. The paisley pillows have great colors and softer lines, but they are still a bit bold for the room I think you are trying to put together. You have a beautiful room as it is, so take your time and find the perfect finishing touches. Any art should speak to you; especially when you see it everyday, you want it to mean more than a place filler. I have no doubt you will find something or have something created just for you. Wishing I hadn't seen the art on Etsy -- I want and I don't have any bare walls. If anything, I have one or two too many things to hang since we moved my dad recently. Which reminds me of what I should be doing..... Here is a link that might be useful: Sticks and Stones...See MoreHow to Decorate around an Off-Centre Window? Any Thoughts?
Comments (9)Yes -- both of the excellent solutions above will work. 1) Hide It! Basically hang curtains across the entire wall. You can still hang swing-arm lamps -- through the curtains -- on both sides of the bed which will add to the illusion. Plus add tiny bedside tables or cabinets to create more symmetry to the entire wall and room. 2) Deal with It! Okay -- the issue is to create visual balance using the principles or ideas of assymmetry. Do a VERY simple window treatment -- for example a sheer fabric -- inside the window frame. Add your bedside tables and lamps. Stand back and look again. Add artworks or something like black-and-white photos (frame in simple strong frames) -- maybe two or three or even a small gride of four to "balance" the window. This can be a bit tricky -- but it all depends on the size, number and shapes of the artworks. 3) Use it! Now this depends on your skills as a planner and carpenter .... create a wall of bookshelves around your whole bed. You MIGHT want to remove the frame around the window -- and build the shelves around it. OR you MIGHT want to cover it with the bookcases or shelves (yes -- remove the frame and frost the window first) Hope this helps!! Comments (52)Great, thanks! Aprilneverends, though I do love that armoire it is a bit too big for the room...I knew that as soon as we moved in. It doesn't leave much room between the end of the bed and the front of it to get to the left side of the bed. The dresser we're looking at is about 6 inches smaller in depth which will really help with moving around in the room. So I think it's for the best for me and the armoire to part ways and it can go to someone else who will love it as well hopefully....See MoreAdding a gable to a rectangular house. Center it or off center?
Comments (64)Thanks for the kind words. I agree that your house is going to be great. The truss you posted does not "cantilever" since its supported at each end; it just doesn't have a continuous bottom chord. Because of the tall porch, the elevation is a bit deceptive. I now realize that this house will have a large footprint so if a porch is under the span of the roof, its possible a truss is the only way the roof can be framed without the use of very deep engineered rafters and/or intermediate supports and foundations. Such framing options would depend greatly on the floor plan. I would be looking for ways to allow skylight shafts to fit between the trusses. Maybe its as simple as doubling up trusses either side of a skylight....See Moreelsie321
