Are you open to painting the armoire? I think painting it a solid color would look smashing, confident and mature.

The bed is gorgeous and makes the room eclectic. You need simpler bed linens and get rid of fussy pillows. Make it functional, not froofy.

ps...really love what you did with the iron bed and the light fixture.

Could you have padded covers made for the head/footboard?

Thanks everyone! Dyhgarden how about something like this plug-in sconce over the bedside table instead of a lamp? The table is small so a lamp crowds it a bit anyway.

We have several large photographs from Hawaii that are primarily black with a little pop of color (lava field and black sand beach) with wide black mats. Do you think they would work? The wall to the right of the bed has a space large enough for them to be stacked.

As for bedding and pillows, I agree. These are leftovers from several rooms in our old house that I just piled onto one bed since we only have one guest bedroom now. I'll pare back.

I'll think about painting the armoire. I'm not completely in love with the flowers anymore but it is so functional since we are storing guest linens and towels in it as the adjoining bathroom doesn't have a linen closet.

That is a gorgeous bed. I do not think you need to go more modern in the room. You really can't fight the bed as it is the centerpiece. I think going with simple bedding is your best bet. I would do something simple such as white and beige bedding. It is hard to go wrong with simple crisp colors.

I would keep the blue and yellow pillows, get rid of the rest. Painting the armoire I'm afraid would be a must if you want a modern feel. I would hang simple gray panel drapes so this doesn't feel like a hospital room, including a panel or two going down to the floor behind the bed. If you have shades the panels can be sheer or semisheer. The drapes could also be white to match the bedding. Does the large mirror go with a dresser? I would paint it black, or both if there is a dresser. I would also paint the armoire black. Modern doesn't always have to mean stark black and white photographs. If everything were already monochrome I would find some great abstract art which has the colors blue and yellow in it, along with reds, oranges and greens.

How about a simple bedspread that tucks under the mattress. No quilt at the bottom so the foot board shows. The idea is to make the bed frame a work of art in a spare gallery. Let nothing compete.

Love your bed and chest . I think a modern quilt in the color(s) of your choice would make bed fit in modern house. Here is an example. Could be b/w but any bold modern color you like will do

I think it looks great. Love that bed. Even though it's traditional, the metal make a it a little industrial. You could paint the armoire, if you wanted to, black, white, or a bright color like orange. A sisal rug, or a black and white striped or geometric rug would look great too. Black and white photos, or some bright abstract art, and I think you're all set.

The armoire almost looks gustavian to me. So to me I could see doing a little bit of a Scandinavian country thing in here. That would likely involve fairly stark white walls and white bedding. I kinda like the armoire the way it is. But it would also look really cool, like, Scandinavian blue.

I love the bed and armoir and find them funky in the modern space.

I design and make modern quilts. If you go that route make sure you buy a quality one with good fabric. People request handmade quilts bit expect a price like they're getting it from Target.

Since you love the armoire, I wouldn't go too extreme (in the modern direction) with the bedding. Otherwise the armoire will just look out of place. Add the small touches, like the lamp, as long as they keep blending everything together.

Years ago, my BFF's DH got a great deal on a modern house. I could not believe it when I saw it pre move in. She had always lived in traditional houses and had traditional furnishings. She is a garage sale/thrift store junkie, so leaned eclectic. . But once she got everything into place it looked great.

Allison, my style is somewhat eclectic though my DH and I like straight clean lines for the most part so I'm definitely trying to mix some of my more eclectic pieces throughout the house with simpler, more modern furniture. Hopefully it will all come together ok. Obviously the bed and armoire are part of my eclectic collection.

Just put em in there and enjoy! No "making them fit" is necessary - gold & gray & cream is a lovely combination that works with old/traditional and new/modern. Pls don't paint - the armoire floral pattern in the context of the rest of the house being modern becomes a fun unexpected piece. If your whole house was the style of the armoire then it would not stand out as a fun, unexpected piece. Just find some bedding in golds/grays maybe in a modern pattern, but harmonizing with the armoire.

Love the bed and armoire as is and wouldn't change them! Lose some pillows and add some modern lamps.

i would have chosen a different light fixture for that room- that's the only thing that looks 'off' to me ... even if you change the bedding and put down a rug or 2, the light fixture doesn't look the best with the bed and armoire- to me - everything else about the room looks fine with the furniture, imo.

Would it help if I showed you guys some of the rest of the house? It's not severely modern and certainly has some eclectic and industrial elements to it.

Love it! You have a great sense of style. Now that you've shown the grey/white stripe wall, you could play off of that for your bedroom. The overhead light in that hallway is great, too.

Your piano with the modern light is a great eclectic look. You know what you're doing!

Also, is the armoire an antique? Handpainted?

If yes, paint the mirror frame black or white, get rid of the blue pillows, and limit colors to black, white, gray, and maybe one color from the armoire.

If no, paint armoire crisp white and add mirror panels to front.

I'm going to back track a bit... if you want the room to blend with the rest of the house, you'll need to ditch or paint the armoire. Unless you can move it to a closet or another hidden area to use for storage. I understand getting attached and not wanting to part with or change it, but at some point it is often time to move on. I hope that doesn't sound harsh. Not meant to be. Believe me, I have things in storage I'm having a hard time letting go of, but lately have come to realize it is time to let things go that are taking up space, not being used now or in the foreseeable future, the grown children don't want and let someone else enjoy them. Other option is to change item(s) so that we can enjoy and they fit in with our home and our lives.

Thank you Alison. We downsized and got rid of quite a bit before we moved into our new home, so I'm certainly willing to make deep cuts if I have to. I won't part with the bed under any circumstances but will consider keeping my eyes open for something to replace the armoire that would work in there and give us similar storage.

That armoire is so beautiful and if you're not emotionally attached to it, I think it's a great idea to change it out for something that you feel works better in your home now and make the existing one available to someone who would love it as it is. Hoping no one buys it and paints it anyway.

I think you should keep the room as it is. However, change the bedding. Perhaps one other change you can make down the road is to paint it more of a beige/gray rather than straight gray.

Oh, and several of you have asked about the floor mirror. It's hard to tell but it is actually covered in grasscloth, so I won't be painting that for sure. I could move it but I like that it brings in the light from the outside door opposite it into the room.

Love your house and think the bed and armoire are great as they are. I wouldn't paint the armoire, I think the flowers add some whimsy to the room. Maybe a rug and less pillows would be enough. That's a guest room I'd enjoy!

Your house is great. I like the clean modern look. I also, love the armoire and the bed, but I feel that maybe the pillows are distracting, would love to move pillows off the bed to see the whole design of the headboard. Perhaps just some bed pillows flat on the bed. I think it may be a cleaner simpler look not so fussy.

Hopefully I haven't made a horrible mistake but I bought some simple white bedding and shams and have ordered the rug below to steer more eclectic than harsh modern.

Oh wow. I wouldn't get rid of that armoire. Since you love it. Why would you let it go?I agree with many posters here-change/simplify bedding, get a different table lamp(maybe taller one?) or even a sconce as somebody already suggested. Put modern artwork you're in love with-almost any good art goes with almost anything. I like the rug you got. Add a plant or two, and you're done. I'd choose something with sculptural leaves-not very dainty I mean.Beautiful house.

Great, thanks! Aprilneverends, though I do love that armoire it is a bit too big for the room...I knew that as soon as we moved in. It doesn't leave much room between the end of the bed and the front of it to get to the left side of the bed. The dresser we're looking at is about 6 inches smaller in depth which will really help with moving around in the room. So I think it's for the best for me and the armoire to part ways and it can go to someone else who will love it as well hopefully.
