I should have stated the location of the house. We are in Oklahoma where it can be zero degrees all the way to 110 degrees F. We are also lakefront if that matters.

I found that Cabot stain samples can be purchased. Not sure about companies.

Sikkens brand just confused me. Some people say Sikkens 1 and 23 and others say Sikkens one coat. Now I have read that Cabot stains are not as good as they used to be. Twp stain is latex based???? Does that mean acrylic?

Definitely use an oil based product. All the water based "latex" stains form a surface film. Any surface film can peel, especially after several coats over the years.

Oil products penetrate into the wood, leaving no surface film. They will not peel, because there is nothing there to peel!

Oil products are normally ONE coat products. you want the wood to absorb all the stain it wants, but no more. Oil stains are not a case of "if one coat is good, two must be better! " Latex "stains" usually require two initial coats. Also, over the years, with multiple refresher coats, the latex stains start to look somewhat opaque.

All oil products will have somewhat of an amber tone which is inherent to the nature of the oils. Transparent, clear oil will make the cedar darken somewhat, similar to right after a rain when it gets wet.

Semi-transparent stains will give better protection because the pigment tends to block the UV rays of the sun.

I have no problems with the stains mentioned: Sikkens, PPG and Cabot's. I have also recently used Behr Cedar Oil Stain on my 150 feet of new cedar fencing, but in full disclosure, I sell Behr products at Home Depot.

I am looking at TWP 100 in cedar, rustic, or pecan colors.

and Ready Seal in pecan, natural cedar, and light oak.

and Armstrong Clark in cedar and natural oak.

I can get samples for these 3 brands, but not the other brands.

Any opinions abhout these? thanks again!

I always advise my customers desiring a sample to buy a gallon, make a sample from the can, then clean the can and return it if you don't like the color. You will only have used a tiny amount. I also make samples on cedar shims to give them to take home. Your paint store might accommodate you with this if you bring them a few pieces of cedar.

However, if the stain is custom mixed, you cannot do this. It is only done with stock colors which can be put back on the shelf.

I asked, but both Sw and Bm said they had to mix their semi transparent paints. At $80.00 per gallon, I didn't want to pay for colors that did not work for me. They would only mix if I bought it, then no refunds.

I actually prefer factory mixed colors, as they use proprietary pigments known to resist fading, rather than the "one size fits all" tints in the machines.

I painted sample red cedar with Ready Seal today. TWP and Armstrong Clark samples have not arrived yet.
