things to make your life easier - what do you think
Comments (12)bldsgal - good point about our mothers. Mine was slim and trim and up until I was in 7th grade she used a wringer washing machine and had no dryer!! And of course she never has a dishwasher and she worked like crazy in a very large garden. Flyleft - you are surely right that many labor saving devices help people remain independent as they become older. But do you think that is really a significant reason companies make these products? I think it's because human nature is to find an easier way to do things and they're intended for the masses of "young" able bodied people flocking to purchase these things as our country generally becomes more and more sedentary. For example BIL has a lake cabin next door to ours. We don't have big yards. He bought a whoppin' big yard tractor to mow "our" lawns. He's not old and he's physically able to walk around and mow a small yard. We declined having the rider mow ours - easy enough to walk it (and easier to get around the trees). Meanwhile he laments being overweight and out of shape.........See MoreDo you consider resale value when you decorate?
Comments (27)I don't think we've worried too much about resale, even as we've completed major kitchen and master bath remodels in the last 18 months. However, with the more permanent/expensive projects, we have looked to the long run, and have tried to make choices that we believe will be pleasing to us in the coming years. Hence, "classic" choices of cabinetry (white-painted maple, raised panel), while making bolder or riskier choices on items that are comparatively easier to replace (cork floors). In our master bath, we've ripped out the hated Jacuzzi tub (never used, waste of space) and gone with our heart and gotten the large walk-in shower, even though some experts would say you MUST have a bathtub. Our biggest statements have been paint colors. We choose for US, and both of us LOVE color. Chili pepper red dining room, bronze-green living room, deep coral family room, searing green kitchen, etc. Those colors have changed in the past, and will change again, but not to beige. Interestingly, in our prior home, we were a bit more cautious, knowing we would move. Nevertheless, it didn't stop us from painting the living room and dining room hunter green, wallpapering an accent wall in the kitchen, and painting all the moldings and trims to coordinate. Our realtor advised us to paint/neutralize before listing the house, but we asked him to give it a try "as is." Maybe we got lucky, but in a very flat mid-90s real estate market, where identical homes were languishing, ours sold in a matter of days to a young couple who liked our decor so much, they offered to buy our furniture as well. Serendipity, for sure, but our house stood out....See MoreDo you have a set budget when decorating?
Comments (16)When we do major projects we have a plan. We decided this year to do some upgrades so we had to plan money for them. Redo fireplace, shutters in rooms prior owner did not install them in, front landscaping, new laminate and tile in downstairs, new tv over the fireplace. I am really proud to say that we stayed within budget, so far. On black friday we did not see anything for the tv. I wanted to keep it at $2500, but dh was getting closer to $3500, not making me happy. At 530pm we realized we misread the price on an ad and were able to buy two tvs for $2500. We put one over fireplace and one in our playroom where we are trying to get all the games to be played but kids did not enjoy their 27" tube tv as much as the 57" downstairs. This was a total win/win! I found my flooring and waited for the sale at Lowes. Put it on a credit card with points, paid for it immediatly, and saved another $25. I found my tile and will open a card to get 10% off, then pay it immediatly. The landscaping just took some careful planning. We got huge deal on some palm trees. Everything is on drip so the water is not wasted. The shutters were more than planned only because we were matching existing style and so I did not have much choice. I have never used design stores but did on a recommendation. I did get a great price on a great product. It was less than HD or Lowes. I had a hard time paying for that but the resale factor on house- not that I plan to move anytime soon- did help me swallow the pain. Now dh did want to upgrade some of our audio equipment that I always hate forking out dough on. But we need to simplify the equipment so we don't have wires everywhere. He found a site where the tv wall mount we could get locally for $125 was only $25 and the cable he needs for the receiver is only about $10 vs $100. He found some amazing speakers on clearance and when he went back to store for something else, noticed an additional markdown so he saved even more. Then he found the receiver he bought locally, cheaper online with no tax or shipping. So that just came the other day. So he did spend money but did a great job doing it. The place we save the most money on is labor. We do it all! We did pay $300 for fireplace store to put in the fireplace and chimney pipe, but we did the rest. We dug the huge hole for the palm trees and spent $300, my girlfriend paid someone to do hers, don't ask but it was way more. I know not everyone can DIY but there are many ways to DIY on smaller things. Like painting. You may hate it but you will save a lot. I had a sofa I loved but it did not fit new house. Since it was older but in great shape, I cut out one cushion of the sectional myself. It looks perfect and fits just right. No one knows it was not bought that way. Saved a ton! I mentioned putting things on the card to get the points. I also have a point system with my bank. I earn points on every purchase done as credit instead of debit. Really helps when dh returns something too, it goes back to my checking account instead of his pocket to be spent on Del Taco. There are lots of ways to have a budget stay within it and be happy....See MoreWhen do you take your Christmas decor down?
Comments (52)Re housecleaners--that was another motivation for me to at least get my tree down last week; I did it the day before the incredibly efficient person who cleans for me came so she could really get everything scrubbed and vacuumed up :). And about lights-after many years of carefully winding them around cardboard or storing in bags, and then taking them out the next year and trying to find strings that didn't have burnt bulbs and/ weren't twisted up....I am living the truly decadent lifestyle of buying several boxes of the 300-light strings from Home Depot, putting them on the tree and then THROWING THEM OUT. It makes me feel sorta guilty but mostly delighted to know that next year I will just spend another $10 and not have to worry or fuss with lights! I finally got all my holiday decorations down, boxed and back in the garage loft on Monday. I use only red or green plastic bins that seal tightly, the color so they are easily identifiable and sealed so no critters or dust can get in. Each box is numbered and I long ago created a corresponding list of the box numbers with the contents of each in detail. I sometimes make a few changes in content so I update the printed list each year and one copy goes in the loft with the supplies, the other stays on my desk. Each year when it's time to decorate I know exactly which boxes have what, which makes it super easy to unload and unpack when I get ready to decorate. It sounds more complicated than it really is I suppose--was a bit of a chore to set up but has saved untold hours of aggravation over the years and makes the holiday effort a lot easier. Controlling type A personality? Nah, not me.......lol...See Morebeckysharp Reinstate SW Unconditionally
