Okay, nothing in there for me...but my friend is dying to try a rambler...and you just can't get those here. Lady of the Lake is zone 7...so she'd probably have to take it and lie it down and protect it.

OK...I'm "shooting" you, Beth, but only with Nerf bullets, lol. I actually saw a couple of those Austins just yesterday, but I didn't go through the whole list. So if I had been more thorough, it might have been me being used as target practice, lol.

Well, guess I'm going to order some bare roots this season after all. And of course I'll have to order enough to max out my roses-to-shipping ratio.

Thought i was done until your post, Beth! NOt knowing where I am going to put all these roses, I placed an order for 4 roses. I think I will just add them to my pot ghetto for now.

Is Hortico a reputable grower? I'm always hesitant to order from them. Not like I would even know where the heck to put any extra roses. Oh, Beth, you see what you started? LOL.

Lol, Is it too late to plant bareroots in zone 9b? I decided to browse their roses after seeing this post, and they have Bolero along with some other Austins I'd been wanting...I was just about to cave and place an order from Annie's Annuals for companion plants, too...now I have to think about what I really "need" this spring.

Nope MAD, it's not too late to plant in 9b. I've planted bareroots as late as May, even in the growing heat. That's not ideal, but right now is ok. As long as you mulch over the bud union to make sure they break dormancy, they should be fine.

Karen, I always try to plant my roses with the bud union right at soil level. I have noticed tho, that some of the ones that have gotten buried deeper can sometimes sucker.

On their website, they said that the roses are grafted on multifloras rootstocks. Do you bury the graft with multiflora rootstock or plant the graft point at ground level like Dr. Huey?

THanks, Beth! I am so excited about this purchase. I have been wanting Poseidon, Savoy Hotel, and Princess Alexandra of Kent for awhile now and Hortico happens to offer all of them. I am interested and looking forward to see how these roses on multiflora rootstocks perform for my zone.

Karen, in the colder zones it can be a good idea to bury the graft around 2 inches no matter the rootstock to make sure the grafted rose survives the winter. In zone 6b you might be fine with shrub roses like the Austins, but I'd always bury the graft of any HT or floribunda for winter protection. In warmer zones their primary concern is the potential of suckering from the rootstock, but in our zones we'd take the suckering if the rose itself will just survive.

FWIW I have only once ever seen multiflora sucker in my yard and I have a lot of roses on that stock. Dr. Huey doesn't sucker for me much when the rose is alive but it's relentless if the top rose dies.

Enjoy your purchases. Not that I heard ANY of the preceding enabling from Beth the wicked rose pusher (smile).

Well, I finally hit the send button on my order last night. I vacillated all over the place trying to decide what to order and what not to order. Finally ended up with: THE LADY GARDENER, THE POET'S WIFE, CRESSIDA, CROCUS ROSE (mine died), OLIVIA ROSE AUSTIN (had a hard time between her & THE ANCIENT MARINER), JAYNE AUSTIN (she died a few yrs ago), and then I'm also replacing a dead FANTASY and a nearly dead (maybe rootstock) SINGIN' IN THE RAIN. Those along with my replacements for last yr's ones that never broke dormancy... PARADE CL, MOODY BLUE, ROTARY SUNRISE (which last yr was a replacement for the wrong rose...) and OVER THE MOON. Hopefully these will all be correct and ALL break dormancy this time. Not sure what happened last yr. I don't usually lose that many anymore. Just happy they replace them so willingly.

Thanks very much Cynthia for that explanation regarding the planting of graft. I have always wondered why the graft should be buried or not buried. Now I understand the reason. You are definitely right about David Austin's roses being hardier than hybrid teas. That is also my observation. They certainly are much sturdier. I think I probably lose many roses this year due very cold temps this January. I have a lot of dieback on hybrid teas.

So gorgeous! Its lovely pink color can also change with the temperatures.
