YouÂre just not gonna believe my good luck and what I got!!

I got about 350 POUNDS of stained glass for $50 off of craigs list!!!!

It had been awhile since I checked out the site, and the listing I saw was about 10 days old. It was a stained glass studio in Naples Â the subject was Â Stained Glass $50. And the description was that they had 6 or 7 tubs of stained glass pieces, and were running out of room in their warehouse. I thought she was asking $50 per tubÂ.but nooooÂ.it was $50 for ALL of it. I also thought it was probably already gone Â but I was the only person to respond!

There were 6 HUGE boxes Â it was difficult for the two of us to lift them off the dolly into the back of my SUV Â and it filled up the back of my SUV (Toyota 4-runner with the back seats down, too). I managed to get one of the little bit smaller boxes onto my scale, and it weighed 56 poundsÂ.and I know some of the other boxes were much heavierÂthus my guesstimate of 350 pounds.

ThereÂs just every color and texture of glass that I could imagine. ItÂs freakin gorgeous! I am soooo excited!!!! And some really nice size pieces, too. The biggest pieces are 14" x 16" Â thereÂs about 20 of those. IÂve been sorting them by color. I have no idea how IÂm going to store all this.

And of course, you know that up until now IÂve been a "plate person". But I can hardly wait to get started with the glass Â you guys have sooooo inspired me to work with glass Â with your beautiful, beautiful work. And now thereÂs no excuse!!

Just had to share this with you guysÂ.did I mention how excited I am?? IÂll try to take some pictures, if you would likeÂ.?

I've been watching this thread because I too am a newbie to lasagna beds. I see much helpful information. I do have a question, well many but I'm only asking one. I have rocky clay soil and thought I would try this lasagna thing. I actually scalped the bermuda from the area but added it back to the lasagna. I started with layers of newsprint. Then added things I already had on hand. I used the soil from the prep work, pine mulch, moldy leaf debris from the rock pile you see in the pic, leftover soil from planters including the deadroots in it, some shredded paper, had about 20 lbs of regular potting soil. Then I went to the frig and found some spent celery, lettus and some green onions. Chopped this up and added the salad to the mix. I tossed it all together and added it the bed. I soaked the paper before adding any of my mix and kept watering as I was adding the mix. It was rather soupy. Now, here's my question. I then covered it with black plastic and lined the edges with brick. I thought that baking the lasagna would speed up the break down process.I have read that others use clear plastic. Is that just to be able to see whats going on underneath or does it have to do with the sun actually getting to the mulch mixture? I finished the bed Wed. night (7-16-08) and last night I looked under the plastic which had lots of heat escaping but it seemed dry so I sprayed more water under there. Oops, Guess I had 2 questions. 1. Color of plastic to cover? 2. Should I spray with water to keep it moist? Before I started Bed with some soil mixture, I added more. Covered with the black plastic I don't mean to barge in someone else thread but I thought others looking for information may appreciate finding it in one location. Please advise. Not everything looks so lush though, Carrie, I just don't take pics of the dead or dying stuff that has fried in this heat and drought. My lupines will be trashed as soon as I can get to them, probably fall, because I can't get them now because other things are so close. Also fried- Mexican Hats, one tomato plant, a few salvia, columbine & digitalis seedlings, clarkia, cerinthe, digitalis, perennial poppies, nasturtium, I could go on and on. Supposed to get to 96 degrees today, rising 5 degrees per hour from the current 85 at 10 a.m. Heat index today 105 to 110. We got 1/10th inch of rain a few days ago, but none before since I don't remember. I've been out watering for over 2 hours, just cooling off now for a few minutes in the ac, then I'll go back out and finish watering. Guess this is going to last till fall. Karen

here's a little sampling:

There's a LOT of ambers and browns...and they are stunning. And there's a lot of clear glass in a lot of different textures.

great post! btw, I found that if you google terms like "stained glass" or "mosaic" and add the word "craigslist" to the search, you'll get good hits. Maybe not all in your area, but I've seen stuff in other areas that I would jump on if they were local, or maybe they are in an area that I can get to.
I just like looking to see what's out there.

Great size scraps! I used to pay $2.25 a pound scraps here.
They were always too small to really do much with. I still have shoe boxes of them sitting around. You did great!

Holy crappola!! Are you ever sooooo lucky! I'm so jealous.
I never see anything like this on craigslist or freecycle, and I check OFTEN.
I don't have any glass shops close to me, but if I did, I'd be calling to see if thay had any scraps. Some of the shops will just give them to you!

OMG!!!!! I am literally sitting here with my mouth open, drooling on my keyboard! And to think, I got excited yesterday because I found a glass place that sells their scrap glass for $1.50/lb! (they did have some pretty good scraps). That is simply amazing. Congratulations.

LOL....thanks, everyone, for sharing my enthusiasm for this great haul! It's been fun sorting through each box, to see what there is. There was so much crammed into each box that it was hard to know what was in there. I do feel so lucky - there is so much glass, and there are so many really good sized pieces. It's gonna be so much fun to start working with it.

I ordered the Morton system. NT - thanks so much for the tip of the low prices at yglass!! Now you're responsible for my purchase of the ring saw AND the morton system!! thanks! :) Oh, and I ordered the maxi-grid, too. And I've been reading back through all my "clippings" having to do with using and cutting glass, and everything I've printed out. What else do I need to get off to a good start - running pliers? breaking pliers?

Oh, Lynda, you're getting serious now. There will be no turning back. You need a scorer (to score the glass)and running pliers (to break the glass). Do you already have Leponitt wheeled nippers? My absolute favorite power tool is my grinder. I often shape my glass with it besides taking off rough edges. And the grinder bits are cheaper to replace than the blades for the ring saw. Fun, fun, fun.
