wall color for stairwell and hallway

Here is a current pic of my stairs. The house was a short sell and the walls were in terrible condition. We had the home painted when we moved in and the painters did not do the best job. I love gray paint, but it marks so easily. The walls are still not in the best shape and I am not sure they can be smoothed out. I am ready to start repainting the house again.

Originally, I used Benjamin Moore Thunder in the entire house. I have recently repainted the downstairs BM Silver Satin to lighten it up. The handrails are BM Iron Mountain.

I had planned to repaint the stairwell, upstairs hall, and bedrooms Thunder again. While it marks easily, I do love the color. Now that I am getting ready to start the stairwell and upstairs hallway, I am considering a darker color to disguise the nail pops and unevenness in the walls.

Is this a good idea? Should I not go darker than Thunder? I don't want the space to feel to closed in and dark but I would like to disguise some of the flaws.
