Wall color for hallway? Opens to other colors

The main hallway runs from the kitchen (perpendicular with the living room) and ends with the doors to the office, bath-, sewing-, and living rooms. It's about 14' long, 4' and 6' wide.

As you look down the hallway from the yellow kitchen, you can see directly into the deep red office, the Lilac Vapor glowing from the sewing room, and the living room (which will be a greyed sage). The bath room is stark black and white, but the door is usually partially closed. The three doors are all white; the living room doorway is open.

The office, sewing room and hallway all have the original white oak floors in a medium non-descript brown color. The living room will have the same floor, if it's worth restoring. The kitchen floor will be ???

I want to paint the hallway. I'm considering the Benjamin Moore "Rich Creme" color. Can you suggest something that will work will all these different colors, add some brightness to the hall, and keep all the colors happily separated?

For the past 30+ years I've lived in college dorms, military barracks, military housing, small apartments, and various places where I could not paint. Once we bought this house I decided I wanted every color. Perhaps someday (very doubtful) I'll tone down the Disney-on-Steroids color scheme, but for now I'm loving it.

I think I need a rich neutral in the hall. I appreciate any advice you can offer.

Have you tried the "hallway" picture on the personal color viewer on BM's website? this allows you to put several different room colors in and see how they flow.

I love lots of color too, keep it going! It looks like Rich Cream has a lot of yellow undertones, which you might be wanting with your yellow kitchen. It is a very pretty color and easy on the eyes.

I would have it the color of your most public room, the family room because you are not going to be chopping it up by continuing that and no one sees your bedroom if it is closed, but even if it is open, I love those colors conjoined.

Thanks for your thought lukki! You are right, white would be a very practical choice. I hope we will move in the next couple years, so from that perspective a practical, safe choice is probably the way to go. And if the doors stay white I am fine to paint the trim (it's minimal, not fancy) as well. Maybe a fresh, brighter white will look better than the current "white", which seems quite dingy.

Yes, absolutely. Ceiling does look higher. The whole space feels more open, cleaner, and airy. It's a pleasure to be there, after 25+ years of being kind of a utilitarian space. So there's hope for all of those boring spaces in our homes, y'all!

color on the walls never went away.. I feel it's about tastes and preferences of course, but geographic location first and foremost. every place on Earth has its own settings..its own light. so yes, the colors are chosen to work with the light that's there as you say adhiker..bright or soft..lighting up and shutting down as with the switch, or lingering.. I also think: every color is a color. White is. Gray is. So what if they're neutral. To me many browns and greens and blues are also neutrals of sorts.. Whatever your eye is used to see a lot is a neutral. People would think neutrals are less restrictive..true..but with so many shades and tints-you'll still choose one main direction for the rest of your things(warmer or cooler, brighter or muted), and add a bit of other colors. But you still will choose main direction. I love taupe, ivory, cream, off white..I have both taupe and greenish off white besides greige as I've said.. I also have shades of green and purple And they all work perfectly well together because they're a tad muted..they're soft, muted, and change with light but in a way that I like the changes And you can actually get away with many much brighter, saturated colors too..so many beautiful examples, whether it's New Orleans or India..:) or England or Russia you can have enfilades of rooms, or just rooms all painted or wallpapered differently yet it all perfectly works that's when you have this very-very open floor plan only, and certain style of a house, when you have to choose a color otherwise hard to pull off.. Also so much depends on the materials a house is built of..architectural style..etc that's why I actively dislike all this "timeless" blah blah. Timeless is beauty. Beauty is different. Forest is beautiful, and sea is, and jungles are, and mountains are, and deserts are. And the most timeless you can do is to go with what's there already, and create a dialogue between the place and you. I don't know why people think something is in vogue. True, something is, but there are literally hundreds of"vogues" going simultaneously It's like if all the people would dress the same but why on Earth should they, when everybody's different? I feel bad writing so much..:)

I have restrained gold in my DR & love that color....actually am thinking of darkening the LR from Ivorie to Restrained gold too. If you need pics I will be glad to post them for you........Bonnie

I would continue the kitchen color, or choose on of the other colors for the hallway.

Hi Caroline, I can think of three ways to go. Your "rich creme" would be one. A pale grey would be another neutral that would work with your other colors. But what I'd probably do is paint it the same color of one of the adjoining rooms. The silvery sage you are going with in the living room would be my pick. That way from the front of the house you don't have so many colors popping out at you.

You might look at an almost-neutral like BM Camouflage, or a nice beige like BM Everlasting. With all the other colors going on, I'd be hesitant to paint the hall a real color. We have different colors in all of our rooms, too, but my downstairs hall is BM Stone House, and the upstairs hall is BM Everlasting.

Caroline, did you post a few weeks ago about your red wall color? Did you choose one? (I may have you confused with another member...).

I think that the light-neutral direction you are considering sounds perfect!

Thanks for the replies. I picked up a quart of BM's Rich Creme to test drive in the hallway. After paying for it, I thought of using some of the "Spool" paint from the offfice, cut it 50% with white, and try that, too.

Southern Heart...Yes, I'm lost in the deep ox-blood red of my office. I do love it; but it will need tweaking sooner or later. It may morph into Bangkok Rust. (I'm originally-and-long-ago from the South, too! After 30 years of living in Texas, Delaware, Spain, Indiana, California, England, and North Dakota people still "hear" the southern in my voice...especially if I get upset.)

Mairin...I bought a BH&G house and garden planning program last winter, loaded it in the computer, and promptly "lost" the disc in the remodeling mess. I am so hoping I find it soon.

Shea...You got me thinking (not an easy task, LOL) that the pale grey might be a nice play off of the black and white bathroom, too.

The real problem is there are simply too many choices when it comes to color!

Caroline, I used SW red bay in my office and SW Restrained gold in the hallways, foyer, great room and stairwells. For me it works well with the red office and the house does not look choppy.
