Heirloom bean seed
Comments (40)Rio Zappe beans don't come remotely close to the coloration of the beans I'm looking for. They are a dull lavender to a grayish-rose, with blackish or brownish markings. Gorgeous, delicious, but not close. The beans I'm looking for are not any type of runner bean, as they are far too large, marked differently, and usually have thick, leathery skins when dry. Mr. Stevens' beans had thin, papery skins like your standard bush or pole "green beans" like Kentucky Wonder. The seeds were the size of pintos, up to about the size of kidneys. They were rounded, not flattened like limas or runner beans. They were a deep, bright, Crayola purple. Look in a box of Crayola crayons at the one called Violet or Purple. They were not uniformly spotted, but they are spotted, not striped or speckled or satiated. Thanks all of you so much for all the help you've given me!...See MoreRoses & stuff #5 (Winding down)
Comments (41)Thank you, Jim, for the pics. of your mountain view, very pretty. Your Mr. Lincoln has so many blooms, so the blood meal & Brewer's Yeast works very well. We are lucky to be 73 degree today. Will pick another bouquet of Heirloom, W.S. 2000, and Carding Mill (has 10 buds/blooms). So glad that I bought 4 roses at $17 each (free shipping) from Heirloom ... just learned that they raise the price to $25 each per band !! Bolero rose is worth every cent... I wish I can find roses like that, but in different color besides white. Thank you, Jim, for the article on Rose Midge. I had minor Rose Midge on Golden Celebration early spring ... that's the only spring that I didn't dump new soil, or grass clippings. I'm going to rake leaves and dump around Golden Celebration. Cornell University stated that either too wet (flooding) or too dry will prevent midge-larvae from hatching. When I checked on rose-midge, folks in Rose forum reported that newspaper didn't work. Personally I think that spreading newspaper or plastic will hurt roses, since that block out water. I like eHow approach of dumping soil, or any organic material before the ground freeze ... that way eggs can't hatch in spring. Below is Pat Austin, blooms well in partial shade. It gets 3 hours of sun now, since my tall house shadows it during late fall. Pat blooms well, but it gets too tall in partial shade. In full sun it's shorter ... I gave that second Pat away, since it's a water-hog in full-sun. This post was edited by Strawberryhill on Mon, Oct 27, 14 at 10:33...See MoreNew Favorite/Discoveries
Comments (15)If one is looking to make a lot of juice and likes a tom with a bit of a sweet flavor, the Red Zebra heirloom is tops in my book. The fruit is from 3-6 ounces but I can harvest 15-20 of them twice a week from each plant. They are still producing now. Plus, they produce the thickest juice of any tomato I have grown. Most of the jars of juice seem to have 2-3 inches of water at the top, the Zebras have 1/2 that. I like Red Delicious, another heirloom for slicers. Nice, smooth shape that ripen uniformly, especially for a beefsteak. Most of mine were at least 12 ounces, most of them over that. The taste is neutral as far as sweet or tart - IMO not something that bowls you over but not close to bad either. A good early season variety with outstanding taste and good production was Siletz. Very few seeds, generally 8-10 ounce, round fruits that also ripen uniformly. One of the best tasting tomatoes on the market, at least according to several people I shared this tom with. Worse: Beefsteak. Yeah, they are meaty and large, but they do not ripen uniformly. The bottom and middle are ripe red, the top ribs are green or white. Middle of the road - Riesentraube. I am not a fan of cherry or grape tomatoes but tried them. One plant was super prolific, another two were as bad as Charlie Brown's Christmas tree. The taste was great to me, neither sweet nor tart, though. But unless I really want to fix enough salads to serve a battalion of rabbits, I cannot see growing them next year. Mike...See MoreHeirloom
Comments (62)Qwerty I think you are right about them hiring a consultant or something. Their current business model makes no sense. As someone pointed out on another thread, $45 for Mr. Lincoln or $5 for him locally lol. Commonly available roses, even here in the cold areas, I cannot justify spending like that, no matter how much money I had! Websites are not expensive to create and maintain, so I don't feel like that's an issue. And here is my personal issue with them. "Buy now and ship anytime!" Yes, maybe. The last two years I ordered late fall or over the winter for spring delivery, and when delivery time rolled around they were unable to fulfill my order - that had been paid in full months prior. Last year was particularly bad because I had ordered several Austins that were taken off the market about the time they should have been delivered, leaving me unable to order them elsewhere either. I think I have 2 roses coming this spring, bought on sale with the reminder of the gift card I was issued, and before the current pricing structure. I'm pretty sure that's my last order from them unless they revamp their pricing structure, and start offering roses that can't be found elsewhere. Sorry for the long post. I hope Heirloom's owners are on the boards and are open to feedback. As evidenced by the rush of people wanting to order from Ludwigs, there is a market out there for roses for sure!...See Morebayarea_girl_z10a_ca
