Living Room and Playroom colors
Comments (20)I'd start by taking down the curtains and leaving the windows bare for a few days. This is an easy, no cost way to see how much light the room gets. If there's plenty of light, then I'd leave the ceiling alone. If not, then I'd shoot for the best possible timing and wording for deliberations with DH, probably with pictures of rooms with painted beams to show him what it could look like. It would be tough to go back to wood once you paint, so really think this one through. We've been living with an exposed ceiling in our living/dining room for the last 6 months since the plaster was ripped down from it. So above our heads are the wood floor joists and the underside of the pine planked second floor. This is in a beautiful room with a nice bay window facing the south (so technically it has lots of light.) Yet it's dark in here almost all the time. The dark wood "ceiling" is absorbing much of the light that the old plaster ceiling reflected around the space. We are majorly looking forward to getting the ceiling done and getting our light back. We know what we're missing out on because it used to be a lot brighter in here. So I think I understand how you are feeling about the ceiling being dark in the room. But, changing the curtains is where I'd start to see if it's "enough" before broaching a project like painting the beams. They do look nice with your stone fireplace, and they work well with the dark moldings throughout the house. Your couches play well with both the stone and the wood. If you need privacy for your windows during the testing period, Home Depot and other stores sell those cheap temporary paper shades that you can stick in the window frames and clip up during the day. I reversed them and made them bottom up shades by putting some stickers of velcro on them and on my window frames at the height I wanted to block out views and just folded them, clipped them together, and laid them in the windowsills during the day. They worked well. Redi Shades at Home Depot If changing the curtains doesn't do it for you (and I agree with everyone saying to hang them farther to the sides of the windows so you can open them all the way), then I'd start looking for inspiration pictures to see if you'd want to do the beams a color or white....See MoreSpare Room- Pantry or Play Room?
Comments (21)Thanks for the suggestions! The previous owners who built the house used it as an office. There is no window as it is in the middle of the house surrounded on all sides. I would love to use the bonus room upstairs as a playroom later on but not until I feel comfortable w our youngest going up and down stairs well. We are leaning towards using it as mainly a storage/pantry room. The kids rooms are so big I think they can share one and the other room will be the playroom. Then when they are older they can have their own rooms and use the upstairs as a hangout space....See MoreLayout for combining living room & playroom?
Comments (8)How old are the kids ? IMO kids toys do not all have to availablre all the time nad if the kids are a bit older some of those toys can be played with in their rooms .You need proper storage so all the toys can be out away at night to create a nice adult space for conversation. There are tons of nice closed storge units that are available but the taller ones will need to be tethered to the wall. This is the first space you see when entering your home not IMO a pleasant look. I need a to scale floor plan and you need to decide how many toys need storage at one time. We had 3 kids and my Dad built the most amazing cabinet/ bench it was made to provid more seating in out LR when we had company but our place was small so the kids did play in the LR but the bech had these great drawers on casters that pulled out from under the bench and all the toys went in there before dinner there were 3 drawers and 3 kids it was always clean up time before dinner and the space was nice for adult company . It seems like the kids do not put stuff away now so you will need to retrain them too....See MoreDesigning a functional living room/family room/playroom
Comments (7)Is the Floor Plan Creator app a good one to use to do a floor plan? I've never had construction done or really cared enough to get a more functional room. But with having a new space made now is the time and opportunity to design a room that works for all of our needs. We have a 4 and 6 and a half year old. I could probably decrease the amount of toys that they have now and maybe move some to other areas of the house. But definitely still have a play kitchen in there and a few other toys. Once I get the floor plan together I'll definitely post it here. Thank you very much....See Morekicez
