Just a reminder of what we have to look forward to.
Comments (5)Is the Araucaria really as big as it looks? Judging by the person nearby, I think the trunk is too big to reach around! Must be an overall nice spot, the boats bobbing in the harbour, parks and flower beds...... our snow from Tuesday is finally melting here. Next week I hope to get the last crocus planted. Here's the tulip patch three years ago. I was also looking at pictures from greener times....See MoreWhich New Roses Are You Most Looking Forward To?
Comments (50)I'm excited about a lot of roses this Spring: I'm finally allowing myself to acquire Lady Hillingon...we'll see if there is enough heat for her here. Even if it's a failure, I'm going to try. Jenny Duval: I don't care if she has a terrible reputation for suckering- the color of the flowers is worth it, and maybe my clay soil will slow her down a little. I can't wait to see what my band of Gruss an Coburg does: it's putting out all kinds of new growth! In October, I rescued two beat up and abandoned 5-gallon pots of 'New Zealand'. The color and scent are lovely, and I think it's the kind of "Modern" hybrid tea that should make some people think twice about "no moderns" snobbery. I'm also VERY excited to see the Spring behavior of the 5-gallon plant of Zephirine Drouhin which I was given to me last summer. I've never grown her before, and I've read a lot of complaints about stingy re-bloom, but mine had flowers on it all through August, September and October. Basically, I'm just excited about all roses, all year long....See MoreLooking Forward To......
Comments (15)Colleenoz, LOL I love that idea. I don't know what I was thinking about doubling the recipe, since each person would get half a potato. There'll be enough for everyone! Problem solved! Caminnc, I hope the potatoes turn out great for you and may there be no leftovers on those :-). Here are the recipes! Enjoy! Fried Green Tomatoes (NOTE: I took two recipes and combined them). Mom and I have used the recipe that was on the box of Whistle Stop Fried Green Tomato Batter, which you just mix the dry batter with water and dip the salted tomatoes into it). Firm, Green Tomatoes Flour White Cornmeal Beaten Eggs (you can also use milk; Paula Deen used eggs and buttermilk for hers) Salt and Pepper Slice tomatoes about 1/4 inch thick. Spread onto plate or baking sheet. Sprinkle salt evenly over tomatoes. Continue placing tomato slices layer over previous layer, until all tomatoes have been salted. Let tomatoes set for 6 hours (Optional; NOTE: We have let them set for about 10 minutes while heating the skillet and they turned out fine) to draw out the water. Remove from container (refrigerated or set out on counter). Mix flour, corn meal, salt and pepper in a bowl. Dip tomatoes in flour, then into eggs or milk, and coat again with flour mix. Set tomatoes aside (up to 30 minutes if you're not in a hurry). Heat oiled skillet over medium heat. Place tomatoes in oil, reducing heat when neccessary. Fry both sides until golden brown, and let tomatoes drain on paper towels. Serve hot with Vidalia Onion Dressing if desired. Vidalia Onion Dressing 1 cup onions, diced 2 Tablespoons rice (or red) wine vinegar 1/2 cup mayo 1 Tablespoon brown sugar Mix all ingredients together and let chill. Serve over Fried Green Tomatoes. NOTE: This also makes a good cole slaw dressing. Enjoy! Brad AKA Moonwolf...See MoreNow, I;m looking forward to....
Comments (5)Never fear, friend Cynic. I've learned how to pace myself. I'll probably make something to contribute to Christmas eve dinner, and for Christmas day, daughter said she will bring up the makings for ham dinner. I'll be talking to her and say I can make the mashed potatoes ( something new, I've discovered, Simply mashed potatoes brand, found in the meat refrig section.) and I can bake up the rolls and maybe a pie or some kind of dessert. Just being together will be the most important...the food comes last. Oh yes, Buster will be in the thick of things. I've never had a cat who was so friendly and isn't afraid of new people....See Morefunctionthenlook
