Don't discount that squares rug from Wayfair. It's available from lots of vendors and if you look at the detail of the rug there are very interesting colorways. You can always just purchase the smallest rug for $35 to check for color.

We will definitely try the setting that you suggested, what do you think about putting the tv on the credenza instead of that dark media table?

Are you going to put a dining table in the area by the stools? If not, you could really expand your "living room" space. I like Beverly's layout and her ideas for rug color and coffee table. Using her layout, you could also add a nice side chair in a fabric that complements your rug (if you do not plan to have a dining table). I'd also switch out your artwork between the wondows for something more colorful - maybe an oil/canvas painting to add texture and decrease the "hard" look of glass. Lower all your artwork a bit, so that the center of each piece is about 58" high.

The credenza might be a bit tall for comfortable tv watching....the tv should be at eye level when you're seated.

For the time being stay with your existing TV stand. You have to keep the TV below the angle of the stair if you move the TV. When money permits, I would recommend a floating TV stand from Woodwaves or South Shore Furniture

If the rug is light like her tile it won't add anything to the room. She needs something strong to compete with the strong shape of the sofa and loveseat.

Did I miss something? Have we been having a struggle with the husband for custody of this room? I'm not going to read all the comments. I'll return with some renderings instead.

Because everything in this room is so intense, I say no to this rug which is even more intense and doesn't help to soften the room.

I actually really like that rug groveraxle just rendered. It suits the furniture. Painting the wall in a light turquoise or sage or the blue suggested way back would look great!

If you need to prioritize, I don't mind the coffee and end tables. The credenza (with the photos on it) and the drapes are making the room brown and formal/traditional.

Two iterations for you, one monochromatic with touches of red, the other introducing some blue:

I would replace all the generic art with actual paintings. In any case, lower the piece between the windows.

Replace some of the dark brown case goods with metal or lighter wood.

Bev, I like that rug, but I still think it's too intense. I think this room needs either cooler colors, or more muted ones.

I like the blue tones in a rug and draperies much better than the warmer orange tones. And for my husband, who doesn't like girly looking rooms, blue is a color that we can always agree on.

Zule, I think you can see the impact that window coverings and an area rug can have on a room. You've got some excellent options here. I can tell you're thoughtful, orderly - and prescribe to the virtue of cleanliness. I have no doubt you'll make the selections that will be right for you, your family and your home.

Decide on your area rug, then move to your window coverings. After that you can look into accent tables and lighting. Best wishes to you.

Beverly, I'm so sorry about Tig. Truth is, Grover is no longer with us either, nor are Oliver and Daisy 1. But Scooby and Daisy 2 would be delighted to meet Tallulah.

I think the blue is really pretty, but blue and brown have been done to death, in my opinion.

I find that artwork will really make a difference in this room. If you do go with blues in the rug and drapes, you might look for a piece of art that is a water scene, with blue in it too. Plus I always find that my husband likes blue water scenes too, so it makes it easier to agree. Water is always so beautiful in art.

You could change the lamps for those with a tall thin silver or brass colored metal pipe as base rather than a "ginger jar" shape-- preferably with large white shade.

Change the window treatment. In lieu of curtains, add a white mini blinds inside the window frame and add a light colored -- tan/natural -- shag valance to each window.

My vote is for the muted softer blue/grey rugs. Open windows made a big difference. Coordinate pillows, drapes, rug in same color family but not too matchy. I'm not fond of the ceiling fan light being the primary light source, can you change out the existing table lamp and add a floor lamp?
