Ah I posted before I saw the last two replies! boxerpups, DH would never let me hear the end of it if I painted the built ins teal! It took 3 years of nagging, pleading, cajolling and completely unsubtle hints to get him to let me paint. Then the first batch of colors I picked he deemed *too pastel*. I was in Home Depot so often getting different samples the paint people ask after my kids now. It might work in my bedroom which is Behr Ultra's Natural Gray. I haven't done anything in there but paint the walls, and that rug and those pillows are gorgeous...

The second rug mdln posted pulls everything together -- even the pillows. Add some art on the walls and a couple of accessories (pulling out the darker blue somewhere might be nice) and you'd be done. I like the warmth of the wood in your coffee table. It is darker than your sofa and works well with it. I would just go to the lighter side for your rug so you have contrast and see it. Painting it white would be too stark - period. And it could look like a flea market find (which could fit in some rooms, but not the clean lines you have going).

Denise, here is a link about lighting. That lamp, to me, is not appropriate for the space without having other lighting, not because of the size, but because the light doesn't point downward. It points upward/outward. It is the type of light you use for ambient lighting of the room. JMO. (Edit: I have to admit I am not a fan of torchiere-type lighting in any form at all, so this may impact my view of that particular floor lamp) Groveraxle, and others on Houzz, are much more knowledgeable in this area than I am....please read these houzz articles to start. Take the time to speak to a lighting professional. It is one of the areas where I see many people forget, or don't know how, to address in their homes.

On my monitor,your floors look pretty neutral, so the right white could work and I don't think you are trapped in a warm scheme. Would you like something similar to the current trim colour for your walls or does it look too white/too stark?
