DCHall makes a very good point and all of what he said is proven however here in central North Carolina mother nature can make deep and infrequent watering a challenge. Typically we see rain every 2 to 3 days here during the prime crabgrass germination period. Even with dense turf it can and will pop up due to mother nature keeping the seed moist. Then come July mother nature goes to very infrequent watering or nothing at all. Last fall I did a complete reno and applied Prodiamine on March 1st of this year with excellent results. We did have our usual wet spring and even with the pre m and thick turf I still had a few sprouts of crabgrass pop up. Nothing major and these were easily spotted (the light green sprigs could be seen from a mile away in the dark green turf) and hand pulled. All of my neighbors lawns are crabgrass, dallisgrass, and other various weeds. If I had complete control of the watering I don't feel that a pre m would be needed but since mother nature has a mind of her own it's a good idea for my situation. I put down the amount of prodiamine to give me 6 months of protection (it's one of the longer lasting pre m's but must be sprayed on so it's a little more difficult to apply) which covered me through August and was gone by the time overseeding came around in September. This can definitely vary by location so there are a lot of areas that may not need anything. Learning to understand your individual situation and your own lawn is key to making everything work.

I'm not sure why the Bermuda Bible suggests mowing afterwards. Generally the time to apply is when the forsythia start to bloom. That is assuming you have that plant. We don't seem to this far south, but I'm pretty sure y'all do up there. You might be seeing weeds which sprouted in the fall and remained dormant all winter. Many wildflowers, including Bluebonnet, are like that.

A pre emergent is a product meant to stop a plant from continuing growth after it germinates so it needs to be applied early enough to prevent that from happening but not so early that the weather will dilute that material and render it ineffective. Just when you apply depends on what you are trying to suppress, but generally at least 7 days before your target "weed" will germinate.

Over the decades, I have taken animals to the vet to be euthanized and never brought them home again, taken them to the vet for euthanasia and brought the body home again, and had them euthanized at home. Of those options, home euthanasia has been easiest for all concerned - the animal being euthanized and the surviving animal siblings. In my experience, animals - cats and dogs (and horses) - have an instinctive understanding and acceptance of death as long as they are given the opportunity to acknowledge it. The only time I have seen my animals experience angst and grief after the loss of an animal companion is when the companion simply "disappears", never to return home again. But as long as the survivors have the opportunity to acknowledge the body after death, acceptance of the passing seems nearly automatic and involves little or no lingering anxiety or grief. For this reason, I now try to have euthanasias performed at home so that the animal who is passing can be as comfortable as possible, and the animal survivors know exactly what has happened. If the survivors choose to remain in the room during the procedure, they have that option. If they choose to go elsewhere, they may do that. The euthanasia itself doesn't seem to upset them, though the vet's presence may. After euthanasia is completed, I lay the body on a dog bed in the livingroom overnight to give all of the other animals the opportunity to "view" the body before I take it to the crematorium the next day. If I must, for some reason, have the euthanasia performed at the vet clinic, I now always bring the body home for the overnight viewing so that the other animals can acknowledge the passing. It really does help them accept the absence of the passed animal without anxiety. If there is any way to avoid it, I will never again have an animal euthanized without giving the other animals the opportunity to view and acknowledge the body after death. I would not, however, take surviving animals to the vet clinic with me to witness a euthanasia. The trip to the vet would cause undue stress for the survivor(s). The viewing of the body should occur at home, not at the vet's clinic. Laurie
