When to apply Pre Emergent?

Comments (4)Hey All Thanks for the comments. I have several types of weeds, crabgrass is one, but not as bad as Oxalis. I think I read here that Oxalis has tubers, but not sure. They do put out seeds -- the turtle doves love them around my house. I also take it that an application now, not knowing all the weeds I have, may be a good thing. Also I'll need to apply in late winter around here to be sure I get it down early enough -- no fertilizer yet because of the Zoysia. Thanks again, Mike...See MoreWhen to apply Pre Emergent and how often should I fertilize my lawn?
Comments (11)I use a pre-emergent without nitrogen and look for what's available at my local stores. Southern States had a granular product with Dimension (0-0-7) and I got that. I used something similar last year, but I may have gotten it from Home Depot then. If you plan to overseed in the fall, be sure to read instructions on how soon after using the pre-emergent you can reseed. That may affect which one you choose....See MoreApply pre-emergent now in San Antonio?
Comments (3)Watch for spring flowering of shrubs or trees in your neighborhood. For most of the country we talk about applying when the forsythia bloom. Well, there's no forsythia in San Antonio - at least none I ever saw. I used to go by the cherry tree at the church down the road. It bloomed in February every year. So in general, wait until Feb unless you see other trees or shrubs blooming earlier. Chances are your crabgrass issues will be much smaller this year for a couple reasons. First is the zoysia has filled in (hopefully) where the crabgrass since died out. If not look for that to happen in late March. Zoysia is a funny turf. It can look like you have large bare spots and suddenly it's all coming in to fill. Don't get too excited and start to water too frequently. Crabgrass is a summer annual plant that needs frequent watering in the spring to sprout. That is the reason for waiting until fall to put in a lawn. At this point you should be watering no more than once a month. This weekend's rain counts for the next 30 days at least. As the temps warm into the 70s you can water once every 3 weeks. With temps in the 80s go to once every 2 weeks. Water a full inch when you water. Measure that with cat food or tuna cans placed around the yard. It will take a lot longer than you think to water a full inch....See Moredchall_san_antonio
