LED Grow Lights With Solar Panels More Effective Than The Sun?
Comments (18)Unfortunately, lots of Sheriff Deputies have little knowledge. I dug up that plant and exhibited it at the county fair (Cincinnati). I showed a couple of people, who are law enforcement officials a leaf and they were aghast that I was growing "pot." It was the Tainug 2 variety - the Everglades 41 looks nothing at all like pot. I was surprised that during the fair, no one questioned the plant and, acting innocently, one evening said something to a deputy that it appeared someone had a pot plant on display. He said he wouldn't know a pot plant if he saw one. The next night, as the fair was closing, three deputies were headed to the area. I am the official photographer for the fair so I asked them what they were checking out - they said a pot plant. Two of them thought it was but one guy knew it wasn't - wrong cluster of the leaves. He was a cool guy - he also likes super hot peppers and I took him some. UGF, I don't have any plants except for a couple of bananas under LEDs, at least not until a few moments ago. I took the tomato that was under the CFL and put it under a 54 watt LED that, alas, has half the lights not working. My experiences with them so far, and it is limited to 14-watt red, blue and red/blue panels and the one 54-watt panel that use to work fine, is that they are great for seedlings and even mid-size plants but not powerful enough to set and develop fruit. That's why I am anxious to find out more - and hopefully get a good deal so I can afford to experiment with the 120-watt panel. Comments (0)If I should find a deal on Solar panels how must I go about testing them to ensure I have good value? I've recently come into enough money to be independent of working for a living daily. It still means I have goals and one of those goals is to purchase at value green energy products. Our economy offers many opportunities but we also balance that against the natural progression of new products. That is perceived values may not be as attractive when compared to the natural progression of technology. I'm a materials scientist in chemistry, electronics, optics. But I lack some experience in mechanical assembly. Let's begin with the basics. Are there any 'gotchas' with regard to the electrical characteristics of solar cell assemblies? Most semiconductors work well if they work at all. Once in place they age less as time goes on. Solarization of the glass and maybe the silicon could be the only problem I forsee. What else can go wrong that would cause financial problems for a 5 KW system? What comes next when I install a system: I firmly believe that we lack initiative in using focussing mirrors to increase light energy to cells. I realize that 10x the energy would destroy the cells. But 2x or 3x , or more with cooling, should be OK. Do you agree? Why don't we see more auxillary focussing mirrors causing light to be put upon solar cells? The newest technologies are doing it. Solar balloon is key for doing this. New Solar Balloon Creates 400 Times More Energy Than The Average ... http://www.causecast.org/news_items/7304-new-solar-balloon-creates-400-times-more-energy-than-the-average-solar-cell http://inventorspot.com/articles/21_million_cool_earths_solar_bal_11056 Why not standard roof mounted collectors and use the waste heat from cooling for home water heating? Ok so the Q I had was about checking a lot of panels for quality. I can do it myself but need to know the things that can go wrong. I will share my time with you if you have any interest in solar, battery power, or optics. My degrees are in electronics, optics, chemistry and lately sociology. Andre...See MoreHelp! Very high electricity bill after solar panel installation
Comments (17)I was curious as to why you are referring to solar energy in gallons instead of kwh kilowatt hours? I have never heard of storing gallons of energy. Energy is stored in batteries that are not measured by gollons but instead are measured by cranking amps, and cold cranking amps. If you have energy storage containers they would be somewhat like large car batteries or more likely similar to forklift batteries . I have 17 4'x8' solar panels that supply power for my house and is supposed to put excess energy into the energy company grid and credit me for the energy that they receive . The actual process is that the electric company gets my excess energy and they give me a $2,200 dollar bill at the end of the year. I think I am being ripped off and have no proof or anyone to give the proof to. I am wishing I didn't spend $14,000 dollars for solar panels and still had $120 electric bill instead of $180 x 12 months all at once. But hopefully you at least didn't have to spend $14,000 to get a larger electric bill ad I did....See MoreUsing used solar Panels
Comments (9)When we bought our home about a year ago it was disclosed there was a leak in the roof as a result of the solar panel installed, but repaired. We've had the roof leak and we are about to repair the roof (terra cotta tile). The install wasn't properly done to insure against leaks and the repair made was caulking. We have to hire a solar company to remove the panels while the roof repair is done and to reinstall the panels. We have been told by the solar company referred to us by our pool maintenance/PB that the solar panel is on it's last legs. The first solar company just gave us a quote to remove and replace but didn't go on the roof. We'll be getting more estimates now, but how long do solar panels usually last? We are in San Diego....See MoreDavidR
