Comments (58)I'm currently reading "Game of Thrones", and really enjoying it. Terriks, I know exactly what you mean about the "porn" in the first episode--we got the 1st season on DVD (no HBO at our house...) and I was sort of appalled. However I liked the overall story so we stuck with it. Interestingly the later episodes did not have nearly as much--perhaps they felt like they needed to reel in a certain kind of viewer at the beginning. Eew! I also enjoy mysteries. Recently I enjoyed the "Lincoln Lawyer" series of books by Michael Connelly. There are five that follow that character. Some of my favorite "special" books I've read from over the past year: "City of Thieves" a great coming of age novel by David Benioff set during the siege of Leningrad. "The Whistling Season" by Ivan Doig. I LOVED this book, but I have to confess some of my book club buds were just okay with it, since it it not super plot-driven. If you like books about interesting people you just want to spend time with, and beautifully crafted language, this is great. Funny and sweet and wistful, narrated by a man looking back at a special year in his childhood in rural Montana. Especially good to read if you are a teacher. "Unbroken" by Laura Hillenbrandt. Pretty harrowing non-fiction, but really fascinating, too. "Any Bitter Thing" by Monica Wood. Our book club read this and every person loved it. I've also recommend it to several people, and they all loved it as well. It can be a little hard to find unless you order online, and none of us can figure why it didn't become a huge bestseller. It has some mystery elements to it, but it's more than that. Happy reading to you all, and thanks for the suggstions...See MoreWhat have you been reading?
Comments (30)I've just started "Life of Pi", and I'm loving it. Don't know why I hadn't read it yet. I do love the Alexander Mcall Smith books, and have read most of his "Ladies' No. 1 Detective" series, and one of the Isobel Delhousie ones, and want to read them all. I'm always reading two or three books at a time, so along with "pi", I'm reading "The White Road" by John Connolly, and another up under my pillow, the name of which eludes me....See MoreWhat Have You Been Doing Lately?
Comments (14)Sue, your life is so full. I can't imagine how you do all you do. My days are mostly filled between going outside to fuss with the flower gardens and puttering inside with puzzles and the day to day cooking and 'light' housekeeping. So much rain that I am not getting as much outside time as I would like. On the 4th we did travel 100 miles to my husbands family reunion. Rain started the day, but by 2 pm it stopped and a good time was had by all in spite of the mud all around our shelter and the playground in the park. Only 21 of the usual 35 or so attended. So disappointing. Seems a lot of the 'young' crowd opted for Fourth of July picnics where booze and fireworks were available. This past Monday a couple that we spend a lot of time with came to lend DH a hand with general maintenance of my elevator that gets me up from the garage level to the kitchen door level. We met this couple just 5 years ago, so we are still getting to know all about each other's lives pre meeting. We ladies had a great visit in the house while the guys worked out in the garage out of earshot! My lift chair needs replaced, so DH and I went chair shopping on Tuesday. We have looked at several brands over the past few months and settled on the 'Golden Technologies' brand chair. Much, much better made than any others we looked at. I chose an upgrade in fabric that added almost $400 to the base price, but I am worth it!...See MoreWhat Have You Been Doing Lately?
Comments (30)I have been enjoying my eldest son's last summer before going to college. He usually travels a great deal on his own during the school breaks for various competitions and projects, but this year, we are spending most of the summer together. Last night I started looking for what to buy for his dorm room. He being who he is has practically no interest in the subject. And his school provides very little guidance- plus his school does not let students know who their roommates will be until the first day of orientation, so you can't coordinate who will brink the fridge and who will bring a microwave. Seniorgal, with respect to the situation with the remodeling of your senior living campus, I am incredibly upset by the callous disregard with which your concerns have been met. The last thing anyone wants as she ages is for her environment to be an impediment to getting exercise and socializing. So here is an idea, it is obviously worth exactly what you paid for it, but I just wanted to suggest you keep a written record of the conversations you have had with management about the new hazards they have installed. A paper trail lets people know you are serious about a problem and when something bad happens, as it surely will, not to you, but anyone else, you have documentation to back up your claims (of negligence, my word, not yours.) It would be good if you could email a brief summary of your conversation to the person you spoke with, his/her supervisor and an outside party, one of your children is a fine choice. For example: Hello Joe, I appreciated the opportunity of speaking with you about the slipperiness of the new flooring in the dining area. As I mentioned, this flooring has caused me to lose my balance and so I no longer can use this part of our lovely facility. I hope you can find a way to resolve this issue, because I am distraught at no longer being able to get out as much as I would like as a result. And I am quite concerned that this flooring will cause someone to slip and fall and hurt himself. As you know, falling is a serious danger to senior citizens. One of the reasons many of us chose to leave our homes and live in a facility better suited to our needs. I have attached a link to the Wiki page on Universal Design for your perusal https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_design . "Universal design (close relation to inclusive design) refers to broad-spectrum ideas meant to produce buildings, products and environments that are inherently accessible to older people, people without disabilities, and people with disabilities." Best regards, Seniorgal Make sure you get every issue covered this way. ETA for clarity....See More
