Pendant lighting over 4'8" kitchen island

Hi all, I am in the process of building a house. It's a modern, energy efficient house in Austin, TX. It's fairly small at 1250 sq ft with an open floor plan on the ground floor that consists of an open kitchen/living/dining area, the kitchen opening up immediately to your left as you walk in the front door. There is a 4'8" waterfall kitchen island in the middle of the kitchen. I am trying to figure out pendant lighting (type, size, and number) for above the island. I am going for a mix of modern farmhouse and more sophisticated boho chic. I had originally picked out two 16"W x 24"H
vintage gold lanterns, but I now think these will be too large for the 4'8" island and overwhelm the space. I am alternatively considering two cylindrical or round mini pendants by Thomas O'Brien (called Katie) that are 7"W x 15.75"H or 12"W x 14"H. What size would be better? Would two be the right number of pendants?

yikes. i dont know what you decided in the end, but i would have gone with a huge, single light fixture over the island - like those ones with multiple globes. not 3 piddly lights. they would just be dwarfed in all that extra overhead space.

I assume you've tried frosted bulbs already, right? Pendants for task lighting are always tricky. Your lights look really good in there when they are off but I think you need to replace them with something more like what Nancy used. An opaque shade--even thick frosted glass--is what you need. If you feel crafty, try putting frosted window film over the sides of the shades. Swap to LED lights in case it doesn't respond well to heat. Once you can't see through the shades, these disguised or new ones, you can use any ugly-but-practical bulb you like, like spotlight style bulbs. Once I swagged an old Tiffany-style stained glass shade over a cooktop. I bet that's not the look you want. But I needed light. :)

Thx, Beverly. The rough-ins are 32 inches center to center so the spacing between the lighting would not be 30 to 32”. It will be less. Do you still think 32 inch centers on an island this size is good spacing? I’m thinking 12 to 14 inch wide pendants is the maximum I should go. Just wondering if they will be too small considering this oversized island.

Depends on your fixtures. If you are getting big fixtures, you probably only want 2. If you are getting smaller ones, get 3.
