Design Dilemma Kitchens Lighting

I am starting to look for three pendant lights over a 10.3’ long island. The builder spaced the rough-ins 30 inches center to center. I’m thinking this is too close if I want a substantial lantern or light, probably the maximum I could go would be 14 inches wide.

I am open to any and all suggestions for lighting. It has been a challenge. Here’s a picture, let me know your thoughts and thank you in advance.

Your spacing will work unless you select really large pendants.

It depends on the pendants and IMO pendant lighting in a kitchen eeds to light the island not the ceiling and who decided those huge pot lights were a choice IMO the biggest should be 4" all LED bulbs 4000K I would do smaller good lighting pendants the the spacing is fine.

you don't need more than 14" pendants.

Claire..their is no choice...the boxes they said are 24” apart and the pendants are 11.5...and the island is basically 8’ long..so that is the reality of the measurements given....the sketch is how it will play out as stated by homeowner....I am not adding what I would do it is they way it will hang without our input...

Generally, a pendant light over a peninsula or island should be spaced about 24 inches apart. You don't mention the length of the counter, but 7 lights seems a little (lot?) excessive. Maybe 5 lights at the most?

This is why I always have the electrician run the supply wires in the ceiling, with plenty of slack. We wait until after the drywall is done to cut the holes and use remodel boxes. People can’t visualize. Even when you draw them diagrams. Or, do an actual real completed DESIGN from the beginning, with all choices measured and specified, and SET. Instead of winging it without the ability to visualize. Design BEFORE you do any demolition or building anything. Then the boxes and lights go where they need to go with no angst.

Thank you, both. We just settled on this coastal home and as you can see, nothing is in its place yet! I haven’t ordered lighting yet, but thinking 14-16” pendants would work. Do you think 16” is too wide? The island is 10.3’ long.

Yes because you have three they do not need to be giant, in fact I would probably go 10-14 max.

Get a beach ball or cut out a piece of card board in a few shapes and size you like I think you will be surprised at how large 14 inches is in a solid state.

Thanks for posting your suggestions! Looking for something without glass or shades. Open and clean looking. THinking oval or round might be nice considering kitchens are so geometric ...square cabinets, rectangular island. Open to suggestions. Thank you, everyone!

Thx, Beverly. The rough-ins are 32 inches center to center so the spacing between the lighting would not be 30 to 32”. It will be less. Do you still think 32 inch centers on an island this size is good spacing? I’m thinking 12 to 14 inch wide pendants is the maximum I should go. Just wondering if they will be too small considering this oversized island.
