Wood hood off-center on wall, would it look like a bad design?
Comments (8)My cooktop and hood are not centered on the wall. They do line up with the window on the other side (which is basically cented on that wall, but the walls are not even) and the center of the island and light fixture over the island. My wall is 33" DO cabinet -- 48" bake center (48" base and 45" upper)--42" hood -- 24" micro drawer base with 21" upper above. About 24" of the 33" oven cabinet is setoff against a 24" deep wall of cabiunets perpendicular to it. There is an open doorway there, so no corner cabinets. I think it all looks balanced because of the relationship between the walls, window, etc. In a different room, it might not work as well....See MoreNeed Help... Comments (8)I don't think you will notice after a while. Mine is off by about 1" on the left, because the *&^&%$ range hood is a full inch less wide than the rangetop (I swear I bought a 48" range hood, not 47"!). But then again, we are DIY so I wasn't about to make my poor DH uninstall then reinstall all of the lower cabinets after it took him a full day in the first place; if we were paying someone for it, it might be a different story. If you choose to keep it, just make sure you don't do a stacked tile BS - you would probably definitely notice it then. Comments (6)I just designed a kitchen with a certified Kitchen designer and learned that most stock cabinets are sized in 3" steps. So you can get them in 6", 9", 12" etc. So for instance you cannot go from a 9" cabinet to a 10" cabinet, the next size bigger would be 12". By the way there was no charge for the services of the kitchen designer from Lowe's that I used and she gave me a ton of good advise....See MoreRange help! Is the center downdraft absolutely needed with no hood?
Comments (15)Do you use your stove more than once or twice a week? Do you cook at high heat? Do you stir fry? Do you sear meat? Do you like to eat bacon? Do you plan on getting a gas stove? Is this your main house where you spend more than 90% of your time? If you answered yes to one or more of these questions, then you should make sure you get a venting solution that actually works and that minimizes smells and pollution. This almost always means you need a properly sized overhead hood and possibly a make up air system. A hood that vents outside is preferred, if at all possible. But if that isn't doable, then Vent-A-Hood is the only manufacturer that makes a recirculating (filtering) hood that hasn't gotten horribly poor reviews. A downdraft is rarely if ever a good solution in this situation. It does make some sense in challenging architectural situations, and if you don't normally cook any smelly foods (see above), or if this is a vacation home that you don't use frequently....See MoreAstrid C
