Comments (82)Thanks, Josh! :) It is just bent so I will tie it up and see what happens. Sorry about the unclear image, I had trouble getting my camera to focus on that one stem. :( Anthony, I am using a fine orchid mix with perlite that I added (I believe I did 3 parts mix, 1 part perlite, as suggested from another discussion thread) (I live in southwest Arizona with a lack of access to good gardening centers and since I wanted to re-pot in a hurry to save the plants from the stalk that had root rot after receiving them I was unable to "build my own" soil). I was planning to re-pot in a year or two with better material I am going to order online and move to the next size or higher pot. Unless you feel I need to re-pot sooner. Right now, it is in a 6 inch pot. They were 3 small braided trees grouped together in a relatively small rectangular pot when I received them so I had thought a 6 inch pot would give them room to grow (without causing too much stress) as they would be separated in their own pots. This is the largest of the three small braided trees I have. Unless the tree's roots have grown at an exceptional rate since June I do not think it is pot bound (but, of course I could be wrong, this is my first time caring for these plants and I know little about gardening). I moved them, a few weeks ago, to a west facing window with better sunlight thinking they were getting too little light in the east window I had them in due to an awning being in the way and have been giving the supplements suggested here. I've seen improvement so I was doing the waiting game on the drooping. Thank you for the advice and taking the time to help. I appreciate it greatly!...See Moreplanting a potted rose what mix sol sand potting mix
Comments (1)Usual recommendation is to remove the soil from the whole and mix with a combo of garden soil (NOT potting mix), humus, compost, peat and bone meal (IMHO). Your ratio should be 50-50. In zone 5a you would probably want to burry the bud union at least 2", but I'll let those that live in your area/zone weigh in on that....See MoreFafard Pro Potting Mix or Organic Potting Mix
Comments (9)I've used many different kinds of potting mixes and will NEVER use anything but Fafard again, though NOT the product on the retail shelves. Their (so called)professional mix is much like the rest of the stuff....barely so-so. But Fafard makes a line of mixes for growers and that's what I use. You may have to have your retailer special order it, but it will be totally worth it for container growing. I used these mediums back when I was a grower of nursery crops and that's how I became introduced to Fafard. My salesman was smart...I had been using ProMix and MetroMix....he left me 5 or 6 bags "to try" and I've never looked back, lol. That was over 20 years ago. I've attached a link so that you can look at the packaging and read the ingredients. I always go for the heavy weight mixes. I buy the Nursery Mix most of the time but keep some of the #3 on hand, too. You'll probably need to visit a locally owned garden center or nursery for a special order. If you're lucky, the nursery, if they do any growing at all, might even have some in stock that they will be willing to sell you. I have a large bail of ProMix in my garage that someone gave me years ago, and I haven't touched it. I'll use it in the gardens one of these days, but never in a container. Comments (4)Thanks, Jo. Those long rambling posts drive me nuts. There's another one going on now. I feel like I have to have a good knowledge of all the previous posts to understand what they are talking about. I read the original post they are referring to, so I sort of get it. I think I went with the 3-1-1 last time and had some problems, so I'm wanting another opinion. Steve Mass and I had this conversation a couple of years ago. I'm hoping he sees this post and responds. (My brain is just like a steel sieve. I retain everything.) Thanks, Ken, but I mean the ratio of the pine bark fines, the peat and the perlite. For fertilizer this year, I'm going with Miracle Grow's Azalea food. It is supposed to be more acid, which I need. I think some of my plants are suffering from iron chlorosis. Our water is very alkaline and with the heat, we have to water a lot. It's 5:00 PM and it's 59 F here. The hosta are coming up. Even S&S is showing pips. bk...See Moreedweather USDA 9a, HZ 9, Sunset 28
