Any recommendations? Treadmill

Time to replace the old one that's a hand-me-down from my Mom. Any recommendations or nightmare stories? DH and I are walkers more than runners. It's less of a space issue for us vs. a noise issue and I don't see any real ratings or discussion on how noisy any of these things are...our old one is way too loud. Also would like something reliable without a lot of maintenance issues.

I'm thinking Proform? Nordictrak? Any others?

If I'd ever consider buying one I would enjoy a screen that makes one appear as tho you are walking through venues, i.e. the woods, park, mountains. ha

I have a NordicTrack. I would recommend it. You will see a big difference from your Mom's.

Better IS better. Get the highest quality, the highest level machine that you can afford.

The Horizon Fitness machines are reliable and affordable. Our original purchased in 1999 lasted 11 years before the console board failed. A good walking treadmill and includes an incline for calorie burning. It was quiet while walking, a bit more noise when running.

I might suggest putting it in the bedroom--few people are in their bedrooms in the early evening, so you'd probably cut down on the problem. And it would certainly make you look as though you're willing to try to do something. One thing I've found: people who get used to lots of quiet find themselves really shocked when noise does arrive. So if she's home all day when you're at work, ANY noise you make is going to seem as though you're extra loud. Dreamgarden mentioned vacuuming--but I had a situation in which my downstairs neighbor went BALLISTIC when I vacuumed. We had a toddler, and we were almost never home, and I hadn't vacuumed in literally months. We left for work before 8am (her in tow). We came home about 7pm, immediately ate, and put her directly in to bed. So I had very little time to vacuum (our place is small enough, I couldn't vacuum when she was sleeping. Then, we were away on the weekends a LOT, so I didn't vacuum. One Friday night we got home at 7:30, and had already eaten. I grabbed my opportunity to vacuum, sand suddenly he was banging on the ceiling (using his oars, since the ceilings are 9.5 feet). Because it had been SO long since we'd vacuumed, he felt we were too loud. Then, the lady upstairs from me was very old and ill. And then she died and the place sat empty. After about a year, someone started taking care of the place, vacuuming weekly. It sounded so loud, and it was really intrusive. I realized that was because the upstairs neighbor had seldom (or never) vacuumed, or if she did, she did it midday when we weren't around. So if you can do something conciliatory, then you maybe can just give her time to get used to it. Extension cord for treadmill, ok?

Not using an extension cord is "the right way". But you probably can safely use an extension cord if it can handle the current draw of the treadmill. You might want to consider what's called an "appliance extension cord". These are heavier-gauge and designed for devices which use more energy. They also run shorter than many household extension cords. You may not find one longer than 3-4 feet.

We bought a Sole treadmill earlier this year, after reading the reviews like you are and comparing the features. We bought the Sole F83. We are very happy with it so far. I don't know how they compare to other brands; I believe the most important comparisons are the motor, the size of the deck, the warranty, and the features each one offers. The Sole is an excellent treadmill and the models we considered offered everything we were looking for after reading articles about what a good treadmill should include. Of course, you should first set a budget, and then purchase the best one you can afford within that budget.

We have a commercial type treadmill on our hickory floors. Underneath there is a rubber mat that was made specifically for exercise equipment. As rubber isn't recommended for wood floors, I placed a cut to size old cotton sheet under the mat. I haven't had any problems in over 10 years. The treadmill is heavy enough that it doesn't budge. Hope that helps!

I LOVE my treadmill. It's got the heart rate monitor(a headband), programs & incline you can enter your own or use ones it comes with. It's 110volt. Has a large roller for the belt. Mines 25 years old! I paid $1350 on sale + a 3 year maintenance agreement, $150. Over the next 10 years the digital read out was replaced, the rear roller bearings went out & the belt got off center, shredded the edge of the belt...all replaced for free. At that point I discontinue the extended warranty. It's been fine ever since. I've read the reviews for new ones by Image....not good. I have a dedicated workout room(see photo), if I didn't....I might want one that folds up. Mine isn't noisy as I have a 55" flat screen in front of it and nice speakers/stereo system for watching movies. I also have cordless/remote headphones I can wear, so others can sleep and hear "nothing"(back when I used to work strange hours & got up @ 3am to work out).

Since I only use the treadmill at the gym, I'll check the brand but am guessing it's not sold to the public. I'd need one with incline, various programs, and a port which allows you to plug into a TV . One gym we go has built-in TVs on the equipment. I could not do the treadmill unless I have a TV to watch. Too darn boring.

Precor is another one to check out. We had one a few years ago (great unit) but DH ended up preferring the Lemond reclining bike.

About a year ago I replaced my Precor EFX machine with a treadmill. I did a bit of online search for reviews and chose LifeFitness. I've been happy with it.

An elliptical is far easier on your hips and knees and will improve core strength as well.

Thanks anglophilia, but I worry about my knees on anything that doesn't keep my knees above my ankles.

Back in the day, I used to do the nordictrak x country ski machine and I found that my hips were just getting bigger because the legs were just going back and forth not side to side. With walking, one foot in front of the other, you get all 4 major muscles of the legs working including the abductors and adductors. Since I've been walking/hiking, my hips have slimmed down quite a bit and my knees and ankles have been fine.

DH, who uses all kinds of machines at the gym, and I talked about it and we decided the treadmill is what would work best for us at home.

I like the treadmill, I walk on it (3.5MPH), raising and lowering the ramp for HIIT for 28 minutes. For me the pounding on the treadmill is good for my bones, I don't get that on the TRX.

Good point, cmarlin...I suffer from osteopenia so the pounding is good for my bones.

I have an elliptical, not a treadmill, but it is a Horizon, and very solid -- seems like a good brand (I bought it used over 5 years ago, not sure how old it is!).

I seem to think the brand typically sold at Walmart (Weslo?) aren't that good, and I seem to remember that any made by Icon -- which includes a large number of brands -- may be of lesser quality. However, I also remember that there are exceptions to the Icon quality issue.

I would definitely look for incline (not manual), a wide variety of pre-programmed workouts, and a good range of speed (even though you don't plan to jog, it is good to up the speed of your walk intermittently)
