Large Kitchen vs. Large Living Room - Remodel Design Dilemma
Comments (6)@Patricia, you have a good point. I think I will definitely want to consult a designer to get their perspective from an aesthetics/space usage mindset. I do have a large media room in the lower level where my big screen is, so I figure if I ever have a large group to watch a game, etc., that is likely where I will need the most seating. The upstairs could then be used more generally for entertaining. My dining table seats 10 and moving it into living area would allow me to add chairs on either end. The addition of a 9-10’ Island would add seating as well. At worst, the family in its current footprint could snugly fit a ~6-7 person sectional and a chair. I think with an additional ~2-3’ feet in length and width, I should easily be able to fit a sectional in there as well as 1-2 accent chairs. Plus if I’m entertaining there would be plenty of space to gather at the end of the kitchen where the new bar would be. These pictures are not by any means exactly what I would do (I used a trial version and stock colors/cabinets), but should help give a sense of layout....See MoreLong living room design dilemma
Comments (8)If you want useful -- I highly recommend a small table with two chairs in the one end. Also, bookcases with glass fronts, or, like I did -- one bookcase and one secretary that closes up to hide the paper and computer monitor. I use my 36" square table for so many purposes -- morning coffee, afternoon tea with a friend, making jewelry, drawing, computer, solving jigsaws. Mine has two leaves that pull out, so I can also bring chairs in from the dining room if I want to have four people in the space. My space isn't crowded. There's at least 4' of space between my table and the rug. You're fortunate to have fewer doors and windows, and a 15' width. My 1939 living room is 12' x 21', so it's divided into three spaces instead of two. My secretary and bookcase had to be on the other end of the room....See MoreEntryway Open Living Room DILEMMA
Comments (82)Just looks like only 1 person can sit on it the way it is! Unless all the pillows are removed. Don't get me wrong, I love decorative pillows. I have 5 on my lounger sofa. Everyone but me takes at least 1 or 2 pillows off to sit/lounge on it. If you are ok with people taking the pillows off, then it's ok. But maybe have a basket on each side of the sofa for storing them....See MoreTV Room doubling as Living room design Dilemma.
Comments (1)There are reasons why most people center the couch, but most people also prefer sitting on a good one. :) I guess I'd try putting the couch where the armchair is now (but extending into the corner), the two recliners where the couch is, and the armchair where the chair/lamp combo is on the right of the photo. I think that the seating would still work for conversation, but you would have the recliners facing the TV (and, honestly, the couch facing the view!). The main drawback would be having to walk around the end of the couch, but I don't think it would be a big deal once you got used to it -- be sure to put some light in the corner though. You could also put a short console behind the couch so it's not such a cold back to the dining room, if so desired....See MorePatricia Colwell Consulting
