How do I get rid of Wild Violet

Hi Everyone,

I was able to identify the weed on my lawn as Wild Violet. I used commercially available weed control products but I was not able to kill these weeds. As we approach spring, I want to make sure these weeds don't reappear. How do I get rid of these?

In my experience they appear in the spring and produce pretty little flowers. Once you start mowing the yard they disappear and you don't see them until next year.

I find them nice in that they are a small sign that spring is coming.

I have plenty of wild violets on my back yard. Mine stay through the summer and disappear in winter.

I like them a lot (I know I should't say it on this forum lol:), my yard is very pretty in spring when they flower, and when the flowers are gone, their foliage stays green.

According to my weed book, your only option is to dig and dispose of each and every one - A narrow but deep-bladed transplanting or rootball spade is the best weapon against wild garlic or onions. Its blade is deep enough to reach under the bulbs, and its handle is strong enough to lever out the clump. Dig close to the clump, with the blade at a very slight angle, then lift. With your hands, pick out every bulb from the soil, even the tiny ones. Dispose of them in the trash, not on the compost pile. A pointed shovel or spade is as effective as a transplanting spade, but removes a bigger bite of soil and surrounding plants. OR you can "throw in the trowel", and harvest them for culinary and/or medicinal use. The bulbs, green tops, and even the flowers are tasty in a variety of dishes. It's also great for treatment of sore throats by steeping it in boiling water and gargling. So many good things about it. :) Brenda

Fire ants make mounds and not holes. The mounds start out small and become larger as the colony population increases. These mounds look rather innocent until you disturb them, and ALL of the ants boil out of the mound all at once. Again, there is never a discernible hole. I never worry about ants in my yard and garden, other than fire ants. Fire ants can be a problem for humans, pets, bird nests, beneficial insect eggs and larvae, and such.

What do they look like? What color are they, and do they grow from leaves that all come from the ground, like dandilion leaves do, or do they grow up along a stem? Are the leaves heart shaped? I'm curious, because I didn't think sweet or fragrant violets were winter hardy that far North. As far as eliminating violets from a lawn, I did spot some threads on that posted long ago--somewhere on thread pages 11 through 13, I think. We have quite a few little purple violets in our lawn that are typical to our area, and I would, personally, never give them up--they look lovely in early spring, when the grass is at its worst. After my husband mows the lawn, you can hardly see where they are. You might try reseeding your lawn a bit with some grass seed especially for shade, if it has become a more shaded area over time. Violets like partial shade, and possibly are competing with a variety of grass that can't compete. For more desperate measures, the old threads might be helpful to you. ;o)

I had tried everything that said it killed wild onion... no such luck... And this year.. they were coming up everywhere! In some obscure forum somewhere I came across the comment that "my yard man said that if I had wild onions I needed to add lime to my yard." I did some more googling on wild onions and lime and found several more similar comments. So.. what the heck... I'd give it a try. I bought fast acting pelletized lime at Lowe's and applied it at the rate of two bags per 5000 sq ft. Amazing... Two months later and the wild onions are GONE! It does seem to be true... wild onions like a more acid soil... and my grass likes a more neutral soil. Adding the lime got rid of the wild onions fast... and my yard is a bit greener and lusher from the lime too. If you have wild onions... give the lime a try. Sure worked for me!

Triclopyr is what you need. Ortho clover, chickweed and oxalis killer works but will take several applications and several years to totally rid them from your yard. If they're not too bad, you can use a small craft paint brush and brush them with straight Glyphosate. This will take them out quicker that any oter method I know of without damaging the lawn.

Glyphosphate kills the top growth but they'll come back from the root tuber. You'd better spray them with Ortho chickweed killer before they flower or you'll have quadruple the number of them by fall.
