How do I get rid of wild onions?

A portion of my yard is covered every year with small wild onions. I pull them up, bulbs and all before they seed, and yet, they return more vigorous than ever. I refer to them as wild onions because they have an onion smell when stepped on. They are 10 - 12 inches tall and have a small lily of the valley sort of bloom. I think they came along uninvited from some other plants my mother shared with me years ago. I've tried the " no two things can occupy the same space" plan but they always manage to emerge in the middle of my new ground cover or right next to my new rose. We have very windy afternoons along the coast and I think the wind has helped them naturalize. Help! I can't stand these stinky little pests.
