Do You Talk to the People Whose Leaves You Pick Up?
Comments (12)People in our municipality generally have a habit of placing raked and bagged - and sometimes shredded ;)- leaves close to the curb before pick-up day. Then they move them to the curb on what we call 'green cart' day. (Our municipality composts so one week they pick up all compostables and recyclables, and the next week it's regular landfill garbage. We have these big green carts where homeowners place the compostables and then wheel it out to the curb.) I always talk to the homeowners since the bags are not set directly at the roadside in most cases. Everyone is always interested in their use, but most are not gardeners so they really don't want the leaves. One guy does shred some and leave them on his lawn, but he's got so many he puts 1/2 to the curb, and the other 1/2 he throws in the woods behind his house. Since meeting him, he now bags everything for me and is happy to see me every year. I have about 50 bags of his stuff under our veranda waiting to be shredded. I've been collecting from one particular household for 4 years now. I had received permission from the 'man of the house' to drive unto his property to get the shredded goodies. This fall, his wife came out and expressed an interest in gardening since she was retiring. I gave her my personal info for her to get in touch with me in the spring so I can give her a boatload of perennials and young shrubs! Looks like the one lady I "could" switch with has made plans on the 7th as well so I am left to just ask for the day off...being prime time its going to be a hit or miss kinda thing. I am very bummed as this lady has asked for favors from me many time and I always oblige...time to start saying no to her!! Comments (33)Thanks for all the perspectives. It's good to know where people like lighting, cans especially. I will take it all into consideration. And I will not have a can ban. They do make sense in some places. Ice1, your lighting looks right. It looks like it's where it should be and it works with the house. I've decided to not put cans in my new room but I will put a few in an odd-shaped room (currently the kitchen but an office after the remodel) where a centered fixture isn't possible because there's no actual center. I'll probably fill in a few gaps in the new kitchen lighting with cans. If I lived in the frozen north, I'd probably want MORE LIGHT. When I redid a kitchen in Detroit, I used two commercial fixtures from the '20s with 300w bulbs to go with the pendant and UC lighting...it was a tiny kitchen. Palimpsest, if you saw my ceiling fans, you would understand that looking half burned out doesn't actually make them look worse. They are that bad. :) They probably won't make it through the remodel because we only use the fan feature a few times a year. I think unscrewing a single can light wouldn't give a burned out impression like it does in a ceiling fan. It would just make it look like someone had the foresight to put it on its own switch. Steph, I forgot I've had one of those remote switches before! I wonder where it is. I bet it's packed up in storage with my ruby glass swag lamp. (It came from a basement pool room decorated with a saloon theme in the 60s. It's one of the most ridiculous things I own.) My house has two original recessed light fixtures. One has been painted over. The other is in a walk-in closet. They are the big square ones with brass trim.
