Question for Magnaverde -- the challenge of the ugly or trite
Comments (32)Thanks so much!! Yes, I painted all of those. The vintage ones were either missing their paints, or the paints weren't useable, so I just kind of made it up with acrylics. I did each pair in the same color scheme, but mixed it up between the pairs. More so because I wasn't happy with it until the last set, than trying to be creative. LOL! That painting for the bathroom had that background drybrushed in the directions, but the whole thing looked a little flat when it was finished. I added a crackle medium to the whole surface, then stained it with a glaze. The whole thing took a few hours of painting each evening for a few weeks. I'm working on one now that's going to take months, if I'm lucky. Tacky or trite? I don't know, but I enjoy doing them. I have a high-stress career, and I find it very relaxing to just chill out and dabble in the paints. And (to paraphrase Magna) I'd rather have something tacky and trite that I did myself, than something ugly bought from the store. Pal, that's a wonderful display! A little too dark and brooding for my taste, but you've shown off the art and set the tone perfectly! I love the blonde girl with the black cat. It looks like Frank -my very black cat....See MoreUgly Couch Contest -- vote for the worst couches
Comments (9)They do this one every year; these are last year's pictures so don't bother voting, they've already chosen the winner out of this batch. They'll be taking submissions for the 2008 contest until July 4th. Yes, some of them are really wonderful couches with fabulous "bones" that are just in need of reupholstering! There's a very nice Mission couch (#02) that simply has some unfortunate upholstery on the cushions, and quite a few Empire and Victorian-period ones that would be really lovely with new fabrics, but a great many of them are just your basic, classic couches. Although I wanna know how anyone's supposed to sit on #85, perch on the very edge I guess... and that white and brown leather semicircular jobbie looks like it belongs in some futuristic movie. David Bowie's "The Man Who Fell To Earth" or something. iasheff, when the alternative is sitting on the floor, it's pretty easy to forgive a hideous couch! We had any number of awful couches in my various college/early-adulthood apartments - we just threw some blankets/sheets over them (we couldn't afford slipcovers) and worried about higher priorities like not failing the physics midterm and who was buying the beer this week. ;-) BTW, the absolute BEST dumpster diving, IME, is outside the dorms at an affluent college or university during finals week. I was always shocked at what these kids simply threw away because they couldn't be bothered to haul it home - after all, Mumsy and Daddy would buy them all new stuff for the beginning of the next year. Oy. The last year I was in Boston, had I had a pickup truck to transport the goods, like brand new furniture, I could have made out like a bandit... unfortunately, you can't fit too much in a shopping cart!...See MoreAre Magnolia prints 'out of style'
Comments (61)This conversation was just fascinating to me. I think the poster should indeed sell the prints if they do not appeal to her or her current decor. Are magnolias dated? Seriously? I'm a native of MS, transplanted to the East Coast almost 30 years now. I have 3 beautifully matted and framed prints in my home. They "grace" the rooms where they hang. The "things" in my home are a reflection of who I am and what I love. As such, things can only become outdated when I cease to be. As we approach the new year, I'm hoping that my time to cease is a ways off yet. Happiest of New Years, ya'll....See MoreDecorating around an 80's floral couch
Comments (21)oh wow. that's some nice upholstery! I'd go for visually light, leggy furniture..so that the room wouldn't be too bottom heavy. If you love rattan-there are beautiful pieces of furniture made of it, from small end tables to etageres. I can see some industrial element as well-to juxtapose with the very comfy, patterned chairs. Plants, of course. Bohemian doesn't necessarily gravitate toward bright colors..there are no rules when it comes to bohemian, i guess that's partly what makes this style..No strict rules, and an attitude of a traveler I found some pictures-they use neutrals mostly, yet the rooms are bohemian I think your chairs are wonderful. I wouldn't even think of reupholstering them, unless the fabric is torn or ruined or something. Can you attach a pic of your room? But if not-can you move everything out of the room, or, say, put it all in a corner, and look only at the chairs? Or even-sit on the floor, look at the chairs?:) some brilliant ideas come when we change things, or at list our visual relationship to them I'd make these chairs stars of the show. You have a great opportunity to create a unique room, with these....See MoreRelated Professionals
