I'm thinking about doing this too, rather than replacing a mirror that is the width of the bathroom wall. I'm hoping any wall sconce will work.

When I have seen lighting mounted in front of a large wall mirror, it has always been side sconces. I think that they look really nice done this way. So, hop on over there and enjoy the discussion. There is a search bar at the top of the Bathroom Forum that will allow you to find out pretty much any time we have discussed Sconces or Lighting in the past 15 years or so.

I personally don't preffer this kind of lighting in the bathroom, but I find the "cold day light" bulbs to give the best possible lighting.

There are plenty of Houzz photos with vanity style lights mounted on the mirror.
