Stepdaughter's Husband Sentenced to Re-Hab Instead of Jail

We're struggling to understand what's going on with my husband's daughter and her husband. We found out through the grapevine that he was arrested for drug possession in 2016. When we confronted her about the arrest, she denied it and said it was a big misunderstanding. We were able to log onto the county clerk's docket and could clearly see the entire arrest record and court proceedings. Last month we noticed that he had changed his plea to guilty and agreed to be placed in a state program "Intervention in Lieu of Conviction." Today for the first time, my stepdaughter admitted that he has a problem, though she's unsure what he's addicted to. She said he disappears for 6-7 hours at a time and says he was "with friends." He begins this program soon and we're pretty sure he might not be able to make it.

Has anyone had any experience with this type of program? She says they will actually pick him up and take him to his classes and visits to his probation officer and allow him to continue his part time restaurant job.
