12 year old Miller oil hot air furnace in double wide

Hi, I am having trouble with a Miller oil furnace. I have a wood furnace that heats the house and use the oil burner as a backup. I have tried to use the oil burner and when I turn the thermostat up, nothing happens, I checked and there is a green light flashing on the control. There is a note that says if light is flashing to recycle. I assume that means hit the reset button. When I do the furnace ignites for a couple seconds then shuts down and the light starts flashing again. Any idea what the problem is?

The system shuts down because it likely detects a no fire issue. Don’t keep hitting the reset button as you may fill the combustion chamber with in unburnt oil . How often does this furnace get used and when was the last time it’s cleaned, adjusted and inspected? The potential issues are numerous. No oil, clogged filters, clogged strainer, air in the fuel lines, water/sludge in the oil, clogged nozzle, improperly adjusted or bad electrodes, bad ignition transformer, bad control, bad or dirty cad cell eye etc. if furnace this has not been maintained by burner pro in some time it’s is probably time . Once it is running again it should be checked with combustion analyzer equipment to properly calibrate the burner.. Oil equipment requires regular (preferably annual) maintenance to operate safely, reliably and cleanly. Some are capable of doing some of this work themselves.

It was serviced about 2-3 months ago when the control board was replaced for the second time in a year. I just moved back in to this house and there was half a tank of oil and the tank was just filled. I was told that new a nozzle was put in. Is there anything else I could check?

The chimney is brick, on the exterior of the home. I've read a lot about that not being an ideal system, but it's what we have. The furnace tech is currently in the basement for the 3rd time, and is talking about installing an exhaust fan on the exhaust pipe before it hits the chimney to help push the exhaust out. He says the draft is "crap." He also mentioned that the newer furnaces (which this is) don't produce enough heat to induce a strong draft, which I have heard about as well. We did have the chimney inspected - twice. And both inspectors said that it's fine. This is why the problem has been so frustrating. Everyone is telling us everything is fine, and it clearly isn't. Should we try the fan?

"It appears that below 30 degrees propane and/or oil become a cheaper method. Would we all agree on that?" I would not agree with that without knowing your utility costs. It is true that the supply air temp from oil and nat gas/propane furnaces is higher than electric heat pump operating in normal mode (without strip heat). But when a heat pump's aux heat (heat strips) kicks in on those cold days, then the heat pump's supply temps are equal to today's high eff condensing gas furnaces but probably not as high as an oil furnace supply temp. As far as a propane fireplace insert, yes this will provide your fam room a nice ambiance and function as supplemental heat but at a high cost. One additional feature of the propane insert is it will function if you lose electric power-at least you will not freeze. Heating efficiencies of these inserts vary and you will definitely want to install a carbon monoxide monitor. I ran some numbers this morning in my Southeast area using the following costs and efficiencies after checking electric, propane, nat gas, and fuel oil costs. The COP used for the heat pump was probably a little low. Electric heat pump $.09/COP 2.5 Res fuel oil $2.15/gal/84% eff Propane $2.35/gal/92% eff Nat Gas $.015/cuft/92% eff Cost per 100,000 BTUs of usable heat Electric baseboard: $2.37 Heat pump: $1.05 Oil: $1.86 Propane: $2.79 Natural gas: $1.58 From the warmair.com fuel comparison calculatorÂ.. I would like to thank everyone for there thoughtful comments. Today another Senior Tech stopped by (the sales rep also a former tech arranged this for us) He walked in and immediately I envisioned Sherlock Holmes just by his demeanor. We went into the basement and unlike the previous 4 or 5 techs who spent hours on this rather then opening up the oil furnace He simply looked at the large pipe that extends from the furnace to the chimney. Then like Sherlock he rubbed his ring finger over it near the furnace. He smiled & said I know what the problem is. (I thought he was joking) After showing me a little dust. He pointed out a little discoloration on the pipe . He then said occasionally the heat is going in the wrong direction.. To prove this he connected a Draft Meter. When the system is on (flame on) its negative but when the fan goes on it is positive (looking for air) We went up stairs and once again he smiled. We have chairs and stuff in front of the outgoing vents and he moved them a few inches & then said problem solved. He said the newer powerful systems simply need to circulate more air. both in and out. We went back to the basement with his Draft Regulator and it tested perfect. IT only took this gentleman less then a minute to resolve a problem that we had since November or December -A problem that most of the other techs downplayed etc The chairs and stuff were there with the old less powerful furnace without any issues. . again thanks for your input.

Deb: Compare the cost of 1 million btu's of heat. I'll use your average costs. Oil at $2.73/gallon, 80% efficient furnace (your old oil furnace may be less efficient): (1,000,000 / 139,000 btu per gallon) x 2.73 / .8 = $24.55 Propane at $2.57 per gallon, 80% efficient furnace: (1,000,000 / 91,000 btu per gallon) x 2.57 / .8 = $35.30 Propane, 95% efficient furnace = $29.72 Heat pump w/electricity at $.15 per kw-hr delivered, C.O.P. = 3.25 at 35F ambient: (1,000,000 / 3414 btu per kw-hr) x .15 / 3.25 = $13.51 Straight electric resistance heat: = $13.51 x 3.25 = $43.90 The heat pump produces the same 1 million btu's of heat at more than half the cost of the 95% efficient propane furnace, and almost half the cost of the 80% oil furnace. Note that the cost of a heat pump defrost cycle is not included in the above calculation. As ambient temps increase from the 35F example, the C.O.P. increases, and the heat pump is even cheaper to run. The C.O.P. was taken from my 3-ton 14 SEER / 9 HSPF Goodman heat pump at 35F ambient. The heat pump needs auxiliary heat for when the ambient temps fall below the balance point of the home. That aux heat can be a propane furnace, oil furnace, or resistance electric strips. Using the heat pump as primary heating, with a gas/oil/propane furnace as auxiliary heat is called a dual-fuel system. These systems have a lot of advantages. Take care.

The oil burner was serviced during the last 3 months, the control board has been replaced twice in a year, and you have a full tank of oil. But the burner will not fire.

Control boards don't wear out in a few months. A proper oil burner service should have addressed any ignition issues. You should be hitting reset to resolve problems.

I suggest you hire a new service company. Your current service company is not doing a good job. This should not be a difficult problem to resolve for someone who knows how to service an oil burner.
