Can I please get your opinions/advice on details of backsplash?
Comments (10)You guys are terrific, and I really appreciate your input. You have definitely helped me settle on grout the same color as the tile. So, to follow-up, yes the shelf I was thinking of was the Grundtal shelf, and yes, I was thinking I would install it so as to hide the brackets behind the tile, which is why I'd need to decide in advance. This one has separate rails that make up the shelf (see link). I was thinking a solid shelf might interfere too much with the venting and lights. I'm still not sold, and I hadn't thought that it could potentially look cheesy next to the range and hood. I think I'll go ahead and get one to check this out. I could always use it somewhere else in the house if it doesn't look good over the range. If I do decide to use the shelf, do you all think it should align with the bottom of the adjacent cabinets? The large pot in the photo is my tallest stock pot. Would that leave enough room to put things on the shelf and be able to lift pot lids comfortably? About the tile next to the window, I just checked and it looks like it's about 1.5-1.75 inches between the window and cabs. Do you really think that's too much of a sliver? I suppose I could mock up that section too see how it will look before committing. Fori, the range is an AGA Legacy. Here is a link that might be useful: IKEA shelf...See MoreVertical Backsplash? Comments (28)I can see why it might be advisable to remove the left/rt portions of tile, but I would be inclined to wait until ithe kitchen is completed before deciding. If, as your gut tells you, it "needs" to come down, nothing is really lost except a little more time with it up. Perhaps knowing you are not "locked-in" or committed to it, will help give the perspective to view it more objectively while deciding for sure. This way you will not only have the chance to see it with everything else in place, but you will also have the opportunity to get used to it, before deciding if you truly dislike it, or just haven't gotten used to it being there. As subtle (in color) as our tile is, after months of looking at white painted Sheetrock, it still looked "different" and stood out when we looked at our kitchen. Once we became accustomed to it, we couldn't imagine our walls without it. That's how I am with many things--after living with a blank wall or empty space for any period of time, even a long awaited piece of furniture or decor item jumps out at me, and almost seems like too much, until I get used to the vacant space being filled. Thanks for the compliments on our backsplash Laura and andreak100! It's the Opera Glass tile from Artistic Tile (Stilatto pattern) in Wolfgang White. It does read greenish-blue(-grey) in certain lights or times of day. We had to think about that one while deciding if we wanted to use it, and obviously decided to go for it! Good luck Laura! Honestly, whatever you decide will look terrific!...See Morebacksplash question- advice please!
Comments (7)I really like all of the suggestions, thanks for the advice! I'll check out the option of tiling the entire wall- the refrigerator is in that corner (sorry I didn't upload a pic of that side) so it would be a lot of tile that you wouldn't really end up seeing. I do like the idea though! beanpiele- I think I could only get two shelves up there unless I took one higher than the hood. The plan for the shelves is to hang the one on the right about 18" above the countertop which would leave 10-12" (can't remember exactly) between the shelf and the bottom of the cabinet. I think to squeeze in another one would be cutting that space up too much. I remember seeing a couple of kitchens with artwork when I was looking for designs and I really liked the idea. It might take a while since I would need something pretty tall and skinny but I'll start looking around. I've been very happy with how the floor turned out- it's marmoleum click and so far it has been great. I was worried about the stripes but now that the floor is down it helps the tiny kitchen feel a lot bigger and I love it. My only complaint would be that the lighter color shows dirt easily and with the door to the basement right there we have to clean it constantly. Thanks again everyone!...See MoreAffordable backsplash advice? Small Kitchen Remodel
Comments (5)Paint really will be fine, if a good quality paint, properly applied. You need a scrub tolerant paint because you will have to wipe it down regularly. It is what I have and had. Have you considered installing tile yourself? So many folks have posted here having DIY and turned out very well. If pre-mounted on mesh it is even easier I believe. I installed glass tile in my bathroom, on the sink wall, using the 2 sided adhesive sheets -- I had to be very careful to get it right the first touch with that adhesive - once the tile touched it, it was stuck! The key is, plan your layout, then take your time! I like the sketch with it all the way across the wall....See Morepalimpsest
