CindyMac-I remember the stirrup pants too! I also had a red pair (and a black). The only day we were allowed to wear them at school was when we had gym. Girls were not allowed to wear pants of any kind at school in the early sixties (at least in my area). Anyway, I was a tomboy and thought I was the cats pajamas in mine lol.

Do stirup pants have elastic that goes around under the foot? I think my mom called them something else. Mom had and wore them all the time in the 60's 70's...I recall they were never tight in the pelvic area probably because of the stretching pulling down. I loved them but never had any myself. IMO stirups would look much cuter than todays leggings

I used to wear stirrup pants decades ago. They did have a strap that went under the foot which gave them a nice straight sharp line when you stood. They were take offs on ski pants, stretchy, out of a heavier fabric, not tight in the leg, though tapered.

I have to wonder if the girl in the tan leggings knows what the back looks like. No modesty at all. I'd be mortified if I suddenly woke up in public wearing those.

Oh yes I had stirrup pants. They were a heavy stretch fabric though and I was only allowed to wear them with a top that well covered the bottom portion.

I love yoga pants but the ones I buy are a good heavier weight fabric and have a tapered leg or Capri. I like leggings in appropriate weight fabric and the top that covers. Just because spandex will stretch does not mean that one should put it to the breaking point test! That last one by bossy, has past the stress test and is in the failure range for spandex life expectancy! Lol.

I think good quality leggings with a nice tunic or sweater and tall boots is a great look for many people.

I had the very heavy wool/stretch stirrup pants when I was in college in the early 70's. They actually WERE ski pants and we wore them with Norwegian ski sweaters and a parka and boots...at Washington U in St Louis! Closest place to ski was at least a 10 hr drive away! But it was "the look" for many of us. They were also very warm for the long walk from the dorms to the main campus.

I wish that women would realize there are a bunch of sickos out there looking at them and getting bad ideas! Transparent clothing should NOT be worn outside the house!

Back in the 80 and 90, I loved my leggings but I always wore them with a long top...no one would have dreamed of wearing them with a short t shirt. I was in perfect bikini shape back then too and wouldn't have dreamed of wearing them without a long top.

IMO, all four ladies above are wearing them appropriately. All four are slim and easy to look at without having an ewwwwwww reaction.

The book I could write if I got started!! I work at a high school and the examples of AWFUL are abundant!!! Just because you have prettier than most parts--does NOT mean I want to see them!!!!

While leggings look better on someone who is slender, even slender women should not be exposing their rumps in public through sheer stretched fabric...not if they respect themselves.

I guess I was being rather snarky yesterday. Let me clarify, I think very young girls, ages 12 & under are fine wearing leggings with any style top. My DGD is 12 and wears them but she is very lean & my DD buys them a few sizes too big so they are not stretched paper thin. I did notice at Christmas she received a few pair from my DD with long tunic style tops & I was happy to see them as she is starting to fill out in the "rear" & she needs to learn to dress like a lady not a tramp.

Honestly, I don't really care much if someone wears leggings if they aren't transparent. That doesn't mean I think they look good. Sometimes it is a better option than shorts...HA!

I wear them with tops that cover my behind. But there has always been something that causes disdain, remember hot pants? Remember that not just slim women wore them? And when mini skirts were the rage - I was young and thin and I wore them, didn't care what the old fogies thought. Now I'm an old fogy and not thin so I try not cause other people to stare in public. But when I see something in public that is tacky I just laugh and move on, there are more important things in life to get angry over.

FWIW, I find nudity to be less offensive than transparent leggings. I don't know what that says about me.

Some of those leggings in the photos look more like tights to me. Tights are meant to be worn under a long shirt, or a leotard, etc, not just as pants out in public. Most leggings are opaque and you cant see through them, or at least cant, if they fit you right. I did wear stirrup pants years ago. I wore them because they were in style, and I was young. They were the most uncomfortable pants, I have ever worn. the stirrups would pull down the pants from the waist and it was constantly pulling them up. I sure wouldnt like them to come back in style. Mine were not ski pants, they were regular pants, that you wore with regular shirts. Some even had matching longer sweaters. I am going to be 79 next month, and I am not all that big, and I do wear leggings, on occasion and no, they are not see through. I even have leggings that look exactly like blue jeans. I am not fond of the print leggings, they remind me of a pair of pants, I had in the 60's that were black and white plaid. They were in style, but, had to be the ugliest pair of pants in the entire world. Some even look like the bottoms of pajamas. lol

Only leggings I have are a pair of black thick ones with a sewn seam down the front. They are over sized so not tight at all. I call them my dress up pants that I wear a long kind of flow-y blouse or a shell and blazer. They look good with pumps or heels. However I'm asking myself why I don't have any. They must be comfy and would look nice with long tops. Can be dressed up or down and can be found on the cheap. I think I want a pair. Black not nude and a long shirt but I'll still refrain from bending over..haha.

I urge you to try them, mama. They are ridiculously comfortable. As I stated, I like the Danskins from Walmart paired with my husbands t-shirts or oxford button-downs....I do seem to rob his side of the closet too often. Men's clothes are so darn comfy, though!

Twice this week I saw young females wearing jeans with the baggy saggy butt. What's with that??? Similar to the parachute type jeans Bieber wore that looked like he was wearing a diaper.

I like yoga pants but mine are the boot cut. The leggings/tights are all I can find now, that are skin tight all the way to the ankle, and that look doesn't work on me. It doesn't work on a lot of people, but they still wear them. Maybe because that's all that's available.

I think leggings is what my spouse uses as long underwear beneath her jeans.

Oh dear, not only leggings but capri cut? I'd look like I was 2' tall. I have a long torso and to be in proportion, should be 5'10" instead of the 5'4" that I am. So I can't do leggings at all. When I cover my crotch with a tunic or long sweater, it makes my legs look so much shorter, and anything that cuts the leg line in the middle from capris to t-strap shoes just makes my legs look shorter still.

I have a pair of leggings that I wear for exercising at home, never out in public. I have a pair of yoga pants (llbean) that fit nicely, looser in the leg and are full length that I can wear to a yoga class and not at all see-thru.

I think many do wear tights as leggings. Tights as mentioned need a skirt. Annie, it sounds like you are aware of what looks good on your body type and dress accordingly. Some people have no fashion sense and wear whatever is "in fashion" no matter how unsuitable it is on them.

I wore tights back in the day when I wore super short mini skirts. So are these what today people call leggings?

I've moved rural, so apparently I've missed this new trend.

What I hated was that hip hop style where guys had loose fitting pants, that all's it would take would be a tiny tug, and their undies that had been peeping out above the pants would be revealed in all their (un)-glory, and their pants would be at their ankles.

Is this new trend even more revealing?

I guess I have not had the displeasure of witnessing such clothing! If they knew how ugly they looked! Oh, well they probably don't care. I loved the stirrup pants, I had two pair back in the 1960's, a black pair and a green pair, they had wide bands under the feet to keep them in place.

I was downtown Columbus today and the skin tight leggings were swarming the university district. There were no protests.

Leggings can be worn looking tight without being stretched to the max. I have always bought them one or two sizes bigger than what I could fit into. I wear them when I skate with a long oversized t.

Does anyone remember when the only women's fitness wear consisted of tights and a leotard? I was a fan of going to the gym (they called them spas back then) when I was younger and that is what we wore. I weighed a whole 93 pounds dripping wet but my tights were one size bigger and my leotard 2 sizes up.. Even back then I couldn't stand the see through look.

I wasn't a prude either. Wore hot pants, micro (very micro LOL) minis and lived in bikinis during the summer months. But the stretched out sheer thing always looked nasty to me, even when I was in my teens and early 20s.

Despite their protests to the contrary, women dress for other women, not for men. We aren't that picky, in case you hadn't noticed.

Speaking strictly for myself, I tend to dress for me. Meaning what is comfortable and feels right.

I work at a university and walk across the university grounds nearly every day at lunch and see students wearing all sorts of questionable outfits. In addition to the nearly ubiquitous black leggings, I've seen shorts short enough that the lower few inches of their butt is exposed, loose baggy tank tops over a sports bra, or a thin lacy bra or no bra, or low-rise pants with their thong sticking up above the back of their pants (which I've learned is called a "whale tail") or just a few days ago a mini skirt and thigh high boots.

Dolly, I concur. I've never dressed for anyone but myself. I think that was born of a mother who tried to control my clothing decisions. Loved the freedom that the hippie/bohemian movement allowed. It set the stage for my future choices.

I do not own any leggings. When you wear them what shoes do you wear? I see them quite often with boots, which looks very nice. But if I wanted to wear them on a mild day in April what shoes would I wear? I have a 34 inch inseam so they are short on me. If it is too chilly for sandals, and I am just casually running errands....then what goes on my feet?

Grapefruit, you can wear all kinds of shoes, sandals, flats, wedges. I don't care for leggings with athletic/running shoes.

None of the pictures on this thread bother me. I think much worse of the creepy person who took that woman's photo and put it online than I do of her fashion choices.

Some leggings are more likely to go ‘sheer’-looking regardless of the size on the tag or that of the wearer because of the fabric they are made of. Anything sold in the leggings category advertised/described as ‘butter-soft’ you can be near 100% certain will be see through once they are on your body. They don’t go transparent only when you cross the threshold to exit your house, so the only way you won’t know is if you didn’t bother to check, or are young and silly enough to not think of checking in the first place but ‘like when boys pay attention to you anyway so whatev’.

Some are for working out, these are similar to fashion leggings but with a different ratio for the materials they are made of, can feel more like a swimsuit fabric only a bit heavier/thicker. Now that many shop for clothes online I’m sure that a few don’t bother reading too carefully before they click on the cart check out button ‘submit’, but even overseas vendors selling on amazon will generally have workout leggings tagged as such (active wear) and not in the same category as fashion leggings.

The young - regardless of which generation we’re talking about - will always be prone to ‘fashion mistakes’. It’s the time of life when we seem to care the least about what ‘old people’ think and of course want to draw the most attention. Sometimes our obsession with looks and cultural fixation with youth makes people hang on to what they perceive as them just being on-trend a bit longer than they should. Maybe if we made a point of raising girls to become women who know they have more to offer than just their looks, and stopped putting teen girls into advertising dressed like adult women for everything from fast food to makeup to clothes - the world would be a less revealingly dressed place.

Jeans have always been a challenge to find a good fit for me - the front to back rise (measured from the top of the waist down to the crotch and from there up the back seam to edge of waistband) has to be just the right number with the cut over the hips sitting at the right point. There has to be enough room in the butt without being too much room there or in the thighs. So while I have a few pairs that look great I don’t want to wear them a ton, that way I can save myself the misery that is jeans shopping and crying on the floor of tiny dressing rooms. But I must have pants, too cold in the Nebraskan winter to not have pants - which I can wear under more pants. And another pair of pants over those. Leggings are pretty darn great and layer well - even over each other! Two pairs of ‘butter-soft’ leggings and a tunic top belted or tailored so it’s more fitted a couple inches under the bust to highlight my small waist (compared to bust and hips, that is) - comfy and attractive outfit...as long as I’m not going to be outside much. ;)
