Design Challenge: Kitchen/Breakfast/Pantry Lighting Recommendatio
Comments (1)Food prep areas need more light as opposed to other areas like the living room. Light layers are actually separate sources of lighting that you could turn on/ off or dim as you please. If your ceilings are ~ 10+ ft, you could contemplate having cove lighting as a third layer of lighting. I've written a short thread on LED recessed cans for kitchens. Some of the principles would apply to other lighting. http://ths.gardenweb.com/forums/load/lighting/msg010127153310.html?14 There is also a thread on UCL. http://ths.gardenweb.com/forums/load/lighting/msg1223052432349.html?19 Hope that serves as a short intro....See MoreNon-Kitchen design challenge- need help!
Comments (30)I think a house that large needs at least one more bathroom, so I think you are wise to make the change now. A window is desirable, and one that opens is better than a vent. I hated the port hole type window we had in one master bathroom -- didn't open and only served to turn the shower/toilet area into an oven in hot afternoon sun -- so consider where your sunlight is if you look into windows. If you decrease closet space, consider adding built-ins inthe room as well as closet organizers. You could use the corners of the rooms or the spaces between the windows and have dresser/bookshelf space, desk space -- just figure out what you need. And that can be done later -- except that having an outlet in the right place for a desk or possibly chargers, lighting, radio, etc. would be good to consider now....See MoreVery challenging space...need help with design.
Comments (8)So, it sounds like you're willing to modify/move the window...is that correct? What about the garage doorway? Is the garage "below" the pantry part of the Kitchen and to the left of the Dining/Living Room? A full-floor layout would help a lot! . Edited to Add (ETA): I'm guessing you aren't willing to remove the brick wall - correct? What's behind it? Where exactly are the "alcoves" in the brick wall & their sizes? Key information! Distance from finished floor, distances b/w the them, distance from the window wall to the first one, distance from the second one to the end of the brick wall, dimensions of each alcove (WxDxH), etc. Has that wall b/w the Dining Room & Kitchen been taken down yet? If not, how thick is that wall? What is the size of the Dining Room? Where is the Living Room? The Bedrooms? Powder Room/Bathrooms? Other rooms? Also, what are the dimensions on the "Pantry" side? Specifically, the dimensions on the window wall, including the dimensions of the bay window and the window well. How far is the (I assume) garage door from the left wall & from the end of the wall on the right? How wide is the door (including trim)? Finally, as a cross-check, what is the width of the opening b/w the right brick wall and the left Dining Room wall -and- the width of the space b/w the bottom of the brick wall and the beginning of the Dining room wall?...See MoreKitchen Tool Design Challenge
Comments (12)I dunno....putting the lids right isn't exactly taxing. You probably need to work more on the cooperation. :) I've tried dividers but ended up with a mess even when there weren't uncooperatives getting into them. The baskets are fab! I have the kind that are meant to be shower caddies. I also have a lot of polypropylene containers whose same sized lids nest. I have short drawer organizers in the bottom of the drawer that they stand up in, all in ranks like good soldiers. :) It really works well. But, erm, certain people aren't allowed to put things away or I'll find the lids in a whole different part of the kitchen!...See MoreBeth H. :
