hallway Design Dilemma Paint

should we paint hallway black?

We have a pretty modern house. We have a very boring hallway leading to the master. We painted a wall black leading up to our second floor and I’m thinking we should continue it to our hallway making it more intimate. We could the do photo walls with white frames.

My husband thinks it will be too dark. I think right now it is too blank even after we add photos. I took a panoramic photo of the main circulation hallway of our house and our master hallway that intersects it.

I also show inspiration photos of the black hallways. I’m looking for opinions.

The niche in the hallway is for a computer area. We bought a live edge walnut slab we will cut and fit in there.

Appreciate any feedback and suggestions that you might feel would be better.

I’m a graphic designer and he’s an architect so we are open to something different.

Where do you want the eye to go? What is the compelling architectural element you want emphasized? You could load the photo up on a paint company's website to try the black on different walls. I don't think the hall is where you want to draw people's gaze. Either do two big monolithic blocks which might include the wall on the left that has the gray door, or make the entire stairwell your monolith and paint the upper back wall black and the part that faces us in your pic black. That would leave the skirtboard and risers white. For real fun paint the treads red to make the stairs the center of attraction. If you do the wall to the left, paint that gray door red. Of course, that may be in contradiction with your furniture colors, but just an idea - gray is so expected. Try something different.

Yes, absolutely. Ceiling does look higher. The whole space feels more open, cleaner, and airy. It's a pleasure to be there, after 25+ years of being kind of a utilitarian space. So there's hope for all of those boring spaces in our homes, y'all!

Personally, I’m OCD enough that I want things to match. Our current house was freshly painted when we bought it and I have no plans to change it. It’s kind of a champagne-y color, but each room looks very different according to the time of day/windows, and our lighting fixtures.

Difficult to paint and costly if done correctly. If you have white toned walls there is ZERO room for error when doing black trim. Every single line shows and must be dead on. Its like black caulk on a white tile. It also doesn't cover like you think it would especially with a semi gloss so more coats and sanding between coats. If you choose a black tomes paint go with an eggshell sheen as it doesn't show defects as much. I would save it for a feature such as a bookcase and then paint rest of trim exact color as walls only in a higher sheen. It gives a clean modern look. We do this all the time and everyone swears the molding are a different color than the walls as the sheen alters the color perception.

Since the stone is staying you don't want to drift too far away from it when choosing the paint color. That's why Celery suggested Grecian Ivory, and the other commenters are suggesting bronze, not black windows. Black windows would not look good, and I also don't think you can use gray or blue on the body because the stone doesn't look gray. Maybe up close there is some gray in it, but most people will be looking at your house from a distance, so you want to be complementing the overall color of the stone from a distance. Your roof looks brown also, so if you're not replacing that you need to keep that in mind. I think if you were to use the ivory or something similar it would be quite a different look than what you have and you would like it.
