NEED HELP with tile to carpet transition!

Hello, we have a new build where the great room carpet transitions to tile, the metal bar was placed at the end of the tile for a cleane look thaN the 45 degree angle transition pieces (we didn’t want that look) but the carpet dips so much below the tile that it actually hurts everytime you step on that bar and it’s very easy to trip everytime you walk from great room to kitchen since it’s not flush. Here’s a picture. Can someone please help what solution option do we have?? Thanks so much

1) Can't use a wood T moulding as the carpet side will not support the wood. Vinyl T will work. Commercial look. 2) Never tuck carpet to tile. Leaves the tile edge unprotected and tile will get chipped. 3) Thicker carpet pad does nothing as it is the tack strip against the profile edge. Simple solution would be to install wood shims/shingles under carpet against profile edge with tack strip on top. This would have been done as normal practice and you should not have been left with the exposed vertical surface of the profile. Once again the difference between a professional installation and HGTV quality.

I would install more of a traditional t molding stip.

We had tile to carpet is our great room. There was no transition piece between the tile and the carpet. I don't think you need it. Its very unusual for it to be necessary. Can you have it removed?

"I don't understand what you want to do. Currently you have a carpet bar covering the carpet/tile transition. The bar is on top of the ceramic tile and covering the carpet. Do you want to remove this brass item and replace it with something else? Why would you need to remove the tile?" Hi, ron6519 -- sorry - I must not have explained very clearly. We don't have any ceramic tile. We pulled up linoleum and put slate tile down to replace it. But the metal piece is not on top of any ceramic tile at all. It's not on top of anything other than the subfloor. It butts up against the tile, with a slight gap. I don't think I have to pull the tile up (it is something that someone at Lowe's recommended we do... I was more looking for confirmation that we DON'T need to). Thanks, Sierraeast, I will try to find the flooring forum. There are so many forums here, that I think I have the right one but I guess I don't. Thanks though. :)

THis is just a summer cottage, no insulation, heat, etc. it was built by a farmer for my parents 50 + years ago. The pine floors aren’t even tongue & groove, just very irregular boards, and I have no interest whatsoever in the time or expense of refinishing them. If you hired a pro, he's the flooring installer. It's his job to transition the flooring he just installed to the existing floor. That's you know......kind of the point of hiring someone to do an install for you. When you start hiring "family friends" to do things, you get little details to finish up like this. Go get a transition strip like pictured by GN Builders, and if you don't want to worry about it next time hire someone you want a professional relationship with, not a personal one.

The metal profile edge in your photo would be installed so that flange is under the tile, next the carpet tucks to it. This transition is located at the center under door when closed. That is where the layout plan begins as it's the most noticeable area. If this is a DIY project I can see it getting overlooked. If you paid for the tile install he / she can resolve the situation they created on their dime.

We can but then that won’t solve our problem, we will have the same issue where we are tripping over the raw edge of the tile and it still will be raised where it meets the carpet instead of flush and level.

Our carpet stuck up above the tile a bit. No one tripped.

You've had a Schluter edge put on a tile that needed a proper CARPET REDUCER. A REDUCER is just that. It REDUCES the height of the tile DOWN TO the height of the carpet. That's why they are called reducers. They are wedge-looking pieces that make this a non-issue.

Your carpet/pad combination is not thick enough to handle the "L" you have. You will need to have a reducer added. It won't be pretty. The schluter "L" has been installed at the same time as the tile...which means it is sitting UNDERNEATH the tile. It will take some effort to change this.

A decent tiler will handle this without much issue. Whomsoever made the original decision will pay for the change. That's how these types of change orders work in new builds.

The reducer install will be much cheaper than removing the carpet and replacing the pad and then reinstalling it all.

Great info and exactly what I needed to know. Thank YOU so much! Question is - is this a cost effective fix since everything has been installed and passed final inspection? And is it something we should have the builder correct, or something for homeowners to corrrect after move in, as it was done incorrectly and You said this would have been normal practice? Thanks again!

The comment "...we didn't want that look" indicates that it was you who decided on the edge/look. If you made the decision NOT to go with the standard option, then it is not the tiler's/builder's fault for putting in your option.

I highly recommend you deal with this BEFORE you move it. I'm not a tiler so my in-put on HOW this gets fixed is just a guess. But my guess is they will have to bust out a row of tile. That could get messy.

The schluter edge is used in other forms of tile edging which means it is "appropriate" for some areas but not others. That's probably why everything passed inspection. But have it done BEFORE you move it. There will never be a better time to fix a flooring issue than BEFORE you put all your stuff in the house.

@SJ Maccarthy- thank you:) we were trying avoid that look we didn’t want to see the reducer sitting above and in between the carpet and tile we wanted the cleaner flat transition look. I’m really unsure of the cost difference between having the carpet installer lifting the carpet or having the tile guy go this route but hope it’s not costly either way.

You have the proper profile edge. A decent tile setter would stay away from the wood reducer and use my previous advise. It's a 30 minute repair with minimal cost.

Thank you again, Creative Tile, now The tile installer was completely different company than the carpet installer. Wouldn’t it be the carpet company who would need to lift the carpet to place the wood and place it back? Rather than the tile

Jena, Use the carpet installer for this if you have the option. It was the carpet installers responsibility from the beginning. Sorry I was typing when you posted.
