I'm the OP. Those marble strips are nice but they only come in white. Since our floor is dark they wouldn't work for us. We ended up going with wood. There was no molding of the right shape or height, especially since we were trying to bridge a height transition: the tile being higher. We bought ranch molding that was designed for window and door frames. If you are not familiar with ranch molding, in profile it has a slope: one side is high and the other side is lower. The installers has to shave some wood off the back to make it fit (to reduce the height), but that was their problem since they had promised they would come up with something nice for us and had not. We had them bring the wood right before the weekend and then we stained and varnished it to match our other moldings. On Monday they came back and installed it. The carpeting is a berber, and the edge is tucked lightly under the lowest edge. The high side butts against the tile/durock and a small caulk line is in between.

You dont have to take out the last row to install one instead of the schluter being installed under the tile you reverse it and install it under the carpet tight to the tile. ( you have to clean the edge of the tile ). Although you would need someone with a bit of expertise to fit the carpet properly. There are rubber or vinyl T moldings that you could use like you mentioned , They will work fine . However part of it will sit on top of the tile raising the profile and creating a tripping hazard . It will be a small hazard but never the less it is something that if you can avoid you should.Go to a local carpet or flooring supplier and they should be able to sell you one and as you say just glue it down cut the carpet to go under the lip of the molding.the carpet should be stretched and held into place by a piece of gripper by the molding so it wont wrinkle there. Please use a decent glue or you will end up just kicking it off. Normally you would not put a cut tile in front of a door like that. Sounds like you had a couple of problems with those guys , sorry to hear that. Good luck

We don't have any ceramic tile. We pulled up linoleum and put slate tile down to replace it. But the metal piece is not on top of any ceramic tile at all. It's not on top of anything other than the subfloor. It butts up against the tile, with a slight gap. I don't think I have to pull the tile up (it is something that someone at Lowe's recommended we do... I was more looking for confirmation that we DON'T need to). Don't use tile, use a hard wood,, a pre finished, or engineered, or even an LVP and run it into the living room.Problem solved, a unified floor, and no "decision" necessary. What are the rest of the floors in your home. ?? Beware the choppy, piecemeal effect, if at all possible. God made entry walk off mats and rugs for a reason.
