Front entry 38" wide single door v. double door? Full wrought iron?
Comments (8)We have iron double doors and they ARE heavy. They are very well balanced though and open and close like "butterrrr". My toddler grandchildren have no problem moving them once they are open. Price these doors before you fall in love with either idea. Our door was reasonable (4K +) but they can run much higher. Your hardware for these doors is not inexpensive either, and if you have the requirements that Renovator spoke of for your area of not being able to leave one side latched- a double may not be worth the security hassles. Our double door is inside a security gated courtyard so we often leave it open in nice weather when kiddos are not around....See MoreOpen kitchens by the front door
Comments (32)I'll bet it was a closed off galley kitchen, the entrance is actually onto a hallway that once led around the kitchen into the living room, and the kitchen was once closed off and had a doorway on the opposite end leading to a dining area and then the living room. Our best friends growing up had that layout. Small entry way leading to a hallway that led one way to bedrooms, another way around the kitchen to the formal dining and living room. Also had a stairwell to the finished rec room in the basement. Small MCM rancher. Was a nice kitchen and I personally love galley kitchens, very good use of small footprint of space. If you suddenly had to go "open concept" with that kitchen, you would walk right into it. and around it to get to the rest of the house. Back when the house was built, the kitchen was mom's purvey and if you weren't doing chores or eating in there, you didn't care what was going on. If you entertained, mom brought all the yummies out from the kitchen to waiting guests, while dad mixed the cocktails! You were relegated to the rec. room in the basement! And don't you dare try to sneak a shrimp off of the platter mom put out on the dining room table! No one had breakfast bars either. If you were on trend, you had a little breakfast nook with benches around a table, in the kitchen. I love those too. Kids might eat dinner there too, before mom and dad had their more formal meal in the dining room when dad got home from work if he had a long day or long commute....See MoreFront Porch Off Small Entry Steps (Different Depths)
Comments (2)You need a min 3' landing in front of your door if you going to alter the existing set up to meet the code. You also have a fire hydrant there (is that real or fake?) if this is a real one you have to check to make sure you meet access clearances before you wrap your new deck around it and also a hose bib needs to be moved....See MoreMy front door opens to the living room.
Comments (29)I'm back again...the architech couldn't make it this weekend to go over our options, but he did mention briefly that we couldn't expand the sq footage of the house, however, we could narrow it. He gave me a couple options: 1) close the front porch (4ft wide) to create a more "entry feel" like the suggestion above which i previously thought not possible....but how will this make the exterior of the house look when the garage and the front door align with each other? 2) move the door slightly closer to the stairs instead of the middle just like the suggestion above but my mom does not like this idea because of Feng Shui and also she believes in double door entry which can bring lots of good luck (can't say no to mom) Below is the layout of the first floor and the exterior of the house. Please ignore the second kitchen, that's another unit that can't be touched. Note that the 2nd floor has bow windows on top (we can get rid of the bow windows per my architech if need be). The arch windows on the bottom look funky i know--we are gonna get rid of arches too. Thank you all for reading, any advice is so greatly appreciated....See Moreacm
