Comments (29)Claire, I have saved one in the past and think (italics) that the bulb bloomed again, but with fewer blossoms. Too many years ago. This bulb may have spent himself having produced 13 blossoms -- a twisted stem of 4 blossoms and 2 straight stalks, 5 blossoms on one stalk and 4 on the other, but I will save him. When the blooms are fully spent, I'll remove the stalks leaving the leaves on the bulb throughout the summer. I will put them outside by the end of May, post frost date. Previously, I put a finished bulb in shade, facing north next to the garage, and did nothing until mid-October, pre-frost, when I removed the leaves and trimmed its dried roots. Then started all over in new soil, but I really think that held-over bulb had less enthusiasm for a second go. I have two to hold over this year, so we'll see if a north-facing summer outdoors encourages either to become energetic in autumn. Comments (22)NHBabs - I KNOW I answered your question yesterday, but it did not appear. Yes, I will start the begonias indoors about the 3rd week of March so they will bloom for a longer time outdoors. I also bought a pre-planted resin pot of tuberous begonias at Costco, so again, an addiction intervention may be necessary. But, bang for the buck in a shadier spot, those tuberous begonias are winners. The crocosmia, which the hummers love, disappeared thanks to chipmunk excavations. So, I may plant them in a tub on the deck where I can at least yell at the digging chipmunks in my sight and photograph hummers from inside the house. We'll see how that works. :) The zinnia seeds I still plant in raised bed planters on the deck in April and cover them with old storm windows. Hummers like those too as do the goldfinches. I like a LOT of color and these days, large containers on wheels are much easier to manage. Jane...See MoreShow Us Your Landscape and Gardens - A Photo Thread - February 2022
Comments (18)Babs your sunrises and sunsets are just lovely! Today I was returning from the gym early this morning and suddenly realized as I pulled in the driveway that it was somewhat light out! Yay! I've definitely been noticing it in the evening but not so much in the morning, so that was a nice revelation (even though I did have to scrape my windshield this morning). The photos of the stream are very interesting. Does this flooding happen often (like, every year?) I maintain a garden for a customer and she has a creek at the back of her property. One year we had a lot of rain, and then a big storm, and SEVEN trees along the creek bank just toppled over. The ground was just too wet. So that was one of the things I thought of when I saw those trees of yours in the standing water. Weather here has been bizarre. Went to work Saturday, it was partly sunny, supposed to be that way all day with temps in the high 30s. Around noon it was snowing unexpectedly. Rather heavily, but not much sticking. By 2 or 3 the sun was out. I drove home at 3, had a quick bite to eat, and was putting on my coat to run out to my daughters. Noticed it was snowing a bit. A BIT. In about three minutes we had a white out. I could not see the front of my yard, the street, the neighbor's house. It was insane. We got about 3/4 inch of snow in about ten minutes. And then the sun came back out lol. The snow stuck around on the ground for a few days though! And tomorrow? 60 degrees. Then snow. Crazy! :) Dee...See Morevee_new
