A Room Without a Purpose
Comments (10)Wow Cricket, I love your sunroom. What a beautiful and functional dining room that will be. I for one have always enjoyed sitting at a dinining room table and reading or writing --- in addition to eating of course. Your's will be wonderfully well-lit. My suggestions are these: --- move the doorway going into the sunroom over to as close to the wall as possible. Where that white rectangle is. You could then put cabinets and counters next to your stove. It would make a huge difference in cooking prep. I moved the doorway between my living room and kitchen and was able to gain real space for my kitchen that way. Went from a one wall kitchen to an L-shaped kitchen. I thought moving a doorway next to a wall would be akward but because my gen'l contractor made it somewhat wider, it isn't awkward. My neighbors all say they wish they had seen this possibility. --- extend/lengthen the wall where the refrigerator now is and shove the fridge over to the new wall. Then perhaps you could fit in more cabinets, more counter space, and sneak in a dishwasher next to your sink. --- if possible. Put a pocket door to your bathroom. That way the door wouldn't swing out to the adjoining room. Perhaps this is not feasible, but I thought I would mention it. --- if the white rectangle is the chimney stack (?) then how about extending the kitchen out beyond the stove and refrigerator. Like pianolady suggests, but perhaps even more. --- okay, maybe this is stupid, but could you reverse the placement of the toilet and sink, so the throne isn't the first thing you see when the door swings open? Then put in a pedestal sink to not block the doorway. --- I would ignore header beams as room markers. When we live in small houses we need to maximize the space we are living in and using, and not worry about everything being perfectly logical. Those are my ideas. Good luck and keep us posted. Comments (4)Of course aesthetics as well as functionality need to be considered pjb. If not, I'd just throw the fan and the cans up where ever. Who cares if they're centered or lined up or not, as long as they work! Thats no way to do things. The reason I'm asking is because I've seen it done both ways in areas such as this where there is more than one 'function' happening within the boundaries of four walls. A lot of times when something like a light or fan is off-center within the four walls, but centered in the actual space of the room, it helps define the boundaries of the room. However, I am working with a fairly small space within my 1100 sq ft condo, so I'm kind of stuck with which way to go. Thanks everyone for your opinions and Happy Holidays!!!...See MoreDo you change the purpose of a room to fit your needs?
Comments (21)I've done it, in a former house, and have actually probably done it again in this one. The front room, which was an add-on one year after the house was built and the family needed more space, was used as a formal living room. I guess they used a small kitchen table in the kitchen for most meals and had some sort of dining set up when they had company, in the family room. In other words--no dining room. Now, I use the front room as a dining room and the family room for the living room. It looks right and works perfectly. But........some folks really are bothered by rooms that get re-purposed. If this is a bedroom, then, why is there a game table in it? If the builder made this room into a dining room, and every other house on the block has a dining table in theirs, then, why do you have two sofas and bookshelves in here? You can't make this a study. I have a dear friend who absolutely subscribes to this idea. She's lived here all her life, can tell you the builder for every subdivision for miles, and knows exactly what the layout for each person's home should be. Putting a dining table where it ought not go is a travesty in her book. So, if your mom is like that too, let it be. Let her enjoy her home and fret over her lack of space for dinner. Comments (4)Thanks for the comments so far! The room was originally a sleeping porch I believe which is why it has concrete floors with a pattern in them. I'm attaching a rough layout someone made of the first floor. The green line shows the approx original outside wall of the house. The grotto was added on and hopefully will come off in the next few years to restore the original first floor layout. And here is a picture of the adjacent formal dining room....See MoreHeather
