Using credit card to extend warranty on appliance?

I see where some people have used credit cards to purchase their appliances to extend their warranty on appliances. Has anybody actually used the credit cards extended warranty, and if so how did it work out? Which credit card company is a reliable card to use for the extended warranty on appliances? I see where Costco extends the warranty for 2 years, but sounds like it is not as great as they make it sound.

I made a claim on the extended warranty on my CitiVisa (Costco) card. We purchased our refrigerator on the card and the icemaker stopped working after the MFR wty ran out but within the period of the extended warranty. Our claim was denied because I had already had the repair done and it was not done by an approved repair person - it was not deemed a "covered repair."

I don't have a lot of experience with appliance repair so that was totally my oversight and I should have known to go through that step. But just some info for you ...

Edited to correct: It was my American Express (Costco card at the time) card, not a CitiVisa.

We use Amex Platinum card to purchase any items that an extended warranty would be useful. I have not used it for an appliance repair as I have not had repairs within the first 2 years. We have used it for TVs, IPODS, cameras and eventually the item was covered. In each case we had to provide a copy of the manufacturers warranty which was online. Due to the nature of the issue Amex opted to refund us the purchase price as repair was not feasible. We had to mail them an IPod in one case but that was many many years ago. My daughters LED Sony TV developed an issue with the screen at 22 months and after several email exchanges answering questions she got her full purchase price refunded and stil has the TV not that it is very useful.

There once was a time when nearly every brand new appliance would offer a decade or more of trouble-free operation. Even those that occasionally failed could be repaired for far less than the cost of replacement. However, times have obviously changed. There are two things about the modern kitchen that decrease the lifespan and increase the expense of maintaining today's appliances. 1. The "built-in" look has become very trendy. While this may lend itself to a more pleasing aesthetic, it often inhibits proper air circulation around appliances which are installed in this manner. One notable example would be the refrigerator. There are fins on refrigerator coils that are prone to dust accumulation. This is especially true in kitchens where airborne grease is not being sufficiently removed by the exhaust hood above the range. Grease will collect on the fins, making them a magnet for dust. As the dust accumulates, air flow through the fins becomes increasingly limited and typically prompts early component failures on the refrigerator. All appliances produce a certain amount of heat. If proper air circulation is also compromised by surrounding cabinetry, it's almost a given that your appliance will not deliver the performance and life expectancy that you desire. 2. Today's appliances are ultra sensitive to their environment. This is due to the myriad number of printed circuit boards that modern appliances incorporate. Digital electronics have the ability to greatly enhance the features and benefits that continue to amaze us with each new model introduction. Unfortunately, the downside is that the components which use digital electronics are vulnerable to voltage fluctuations, heat and vibration. Even a passing thunderstorm poses a threat that shouldn't be taken lightly. Many utility companies recognize this and offer whole house surge protection as a supplemental service, although it isn't foolproof by any means. When you combine inadequate air circulation and the unstable current flow that every home electrical system routinely experiences, the potential for appliance failure is ever-present. Bottom line: Follow the manufacturer's guidelines regarding appliance installation. Ask your utility company about surge protection devices. Consider extending the warranty on any appliance that involves significant expense to purchase or maintain.

I have dealt with literally hundreds of complaints on consumer products and services with a 92% success rate. First, NEVER deal with a low-level employee on these matters. Next, write a certified letter to the CEO of Advantium. Dates, facts of what went wrong...who you have spoken to thusfar, the whole wallet full of steps and phone calls you have taken. Do not write your opinion about any of your experiences with the help. Just the facts, explained dispassionately, and that you still haven't received satisfaction. Why certified? It signals you are a man of serious intent. At the end of your letter - state what you want. Perhaps by this point in time it's fair to ask for a new Speed Cooker entirely. Wait 30 days until after your return receipt has shown up. Finally, if the CEO or a rep. does not contact you to your satisfaction within 30 days - send a copy of the original letter to each member of the board of directors. YOU WILL CERTAINLY GET SOME POSITIVE ACTION.

Do not buy 3rd party warranties. CPS has no technicians, but rather will find some hack in your area to try and fix your appliances. An excerpt from a poster on the Complaints Board: Terrible company to deal with. My ice maker has been broken for 9 months now. They have sent a repair technician out to fix it over 5 times changing several parts on it only to be a temporary fix. They now refuse to come back out because they say the unit is unrepairable. Before CPS can replace the unit under lemon law, they had to get a second opinion so they sent out a different company who have come out 3 times and they too say that the unit is unrapairable. I'm still waiting to hear from CPS's supervisors, David and Eli! I have a 5 year warranty on a $3, 500 refrigerator and it has been a complete nightmare to deal with CPS and I still have a broken ice box! I would NOT recommend getting warranty with this company! Complains Board - Read This!

We are getting ready to remodel our kitchen and purchase new appliances. I asked an independent repairman about his recommendations. He said to stay away from LG refrigerators as that is one he gets lots of repair calls for. It's always a gamble, deciding whether to buy the warranty or not.

Very similar situation to tackykat's above: Samsung fridge, failed icemaker that Samsung refused to fix about 3 months out of warranty. Had used Costco Amex to purchase fridge--still in CC warranty window, called Amex (they honored the purchase warranty even though card was now VISA) , had to get authorized Samsung tech and Amex reimbursed for service call quickly and efficiently. That repair failed and Samsung agreed to replace icemaker (which needless to say has already failed). Bottom lines: 1) CC extended warranty worked (Amex anyway) and saved us about $300; 2) If you're looking at Samsung Fridge with indoor ice dispenser, move on the the next choice. Quickly.

GE Microwave Oven purchased with TDAmeritrade credit card for the extended warranty. Microwave stopped heating food/liquids after 1.75 years. Claimed since Warranty only covered 1 year. Warranty Manager denied claim stating that installing a microwave constitutes it becoming part of real estate which isnt covered. After sending in a reconsideration request, Warranty Manager never responded to our weekly calls/requests for update.

Dont count on getting reimbursed. It's a BIG time gimmick, marketing scheme to entice you to use one credit card over another. After weekly calls to Warranty Manager, and after a month, they denied our request since it's "installed." It was a hellish month to go without the microwave and only to add to our frustration was the lack of customer service.
