GE extra warranty?
Comments (1)My appliance dealer uses only GE for their extended warranties on all appliances. I'm buying Jenn-air, Kitchen Aid, and GE Monagram with the GE extended. I trust my appliance dealer and assume that they know what they are doing. I hope I don't need to use any - but that remains to be seen. It is costing me $80 per appliance for a 4 year extension....See Moreextended warranties on appliances-- yea or nay?
Comments (16)There once was a time when nearly every brand new appliance would offer a decade or more of trouble-free operation. Even those that occasionally failed could be repaired for far less than the cost of replacement. However, times have obviously changed. There are two things about the modern kitchen that decrease the lifespan and increase the expense of maintaining today's appliances. 1. The "built-in" look has become very trendy. While this may lend itself to a more pleasing aesthetic, it often inhibits proper air circulation around appliances which are installed in this manner. One notable example would be the refrigerator. There are fins on refrigerator coils that are prone to dust accumulation. This is especially true in kitchens where airborne grease is not being sufficiently removed by the exhaust hood above the range. Grease will collect on the fins, making them a magnet for dust. As the dust accumulates, air flow through the fins becomes increasingly limited and typically prompts early component failures on the refrigerator. All appliances produce a certain amount of heat. If proper air circulation is also compromised by surrounding cabinetry, it's almost a given that your appliance will not deliver the performance and life expectancy that you desire. 2. Today's appliances are ultra sensitive to their environment. This is due to the myriad number of printed circuit boards that modern appliances incorporate. Digital electronics have the ability to greatly enhance the features and benefits that continue to amaze us with each new model introduction. Unfortunately, the downside is that the components which use digital electronics are vulnerable to voltage fluctuations, heat and vibration. Even a passing thunderstorm poses a threat that shouldn't be taken lightly. Many utility companies recognize this and offer whole house surge protection as a supplemental service, although it isn't foolproof by any means. When you combine inadequate air circulation and the unstable current flow that every home electrical system routinely experiences, the potential for appliance failure is ever-present. Bottom line: Follow the manufacturer's guidelines regarding appliance installation. Ask your utility company about surge protection devices. Consider extending the warranty on any appliance that involves significant expense to purchase or maintain....See MoreAny experience with GE extended warranty?
Comments (2)Hi try_hard, I'm feeling a little better about purchasing the extended warranty. GE told me that the store where I purchased the machine did NOT do extended warranty repairs for them. When I called the store they said they did...and if I needed a repair under the extended warranty just to call them instead of GE and they'd arrange it with GE for me! I also stumbled upon another repair shop that does GE warranty repairs. She said they've never had any trouble and that they don't really get anything from dealing with GE. GE pays them a flat rate for each repair. I'd recommend that you call around to different appliance repair shops in your area and ask them if they do GE warranty repairs and/or if they know anything about the company, etc. GE told me if I'd purchased the warranty directly from them I'd have 30 days to cancel. The fellow said I could actually cancel at any time but probably wouldn't get a full refund if it was after a year, etc. But who knows if he knew what he was talking about!! I'd start with the repair shops. I'll be interested to hear if you find anything out! I paid $125 for 4 years. So....I should not have to pay for any repairs for 5 years...including the 1 year factory warranty. Good luck! Mary...See MoreExtended warranty?
Comments (4)Well, obviously if you have problems that are covered by the service contract you'd be glad you bought the service contract or unhappy you didn't get it. If you have no problems or problems that aren't covered by the service contractr, you probably would consider a service contract a waste of money. The question is do you think you'll get a defective unit? The first five years should be the most reliable years on the appliance life. I'd look to buy a service contract for the post prime years but that's not too likely. Given the price and track record of the Cabrio/Oasis/Bravos models, and even though they've improved I probably would cough up $100 for the service contract. I have never bought a service contract. There gets to be a point where you put so much money into something that you need to have insurance on it. If you have something less expensive, self-insuring is a far better value. Be sure to read the service contract thoroughly, not just the sales bullets. And keep in mind a service contract repair can take a lot longer than a hired repair. Factor that into your consideration. Would it be worth a few bucks to avoid going to a laundromat for a couple months while you wait for service?...See Moresushipup1
