Chelone glabra .............................................. Noteworthy Characteristics: This species of turtlehead is a stiffly erect, clump-forming, leafy-stemmed, Missouri native perennial which typically grows 2-3' tall and occurs in moist woods, swampy areas and along streams mostly in the southeastern part of the State. Hooded, snapdragon-like, two-lipped, white flowers with a tinge of pink appear in tight, spike-like terminal racemes from late summer into autumn. Flowers purportedly resemble turtle heads. The photo at the link below shows the seedhead. After the flowers have dried up and dissappeared, there will be a shell like structure that looks something like a turtle's head or a parrot's beak. When they turn brown and dry they split and release the seeds. The seeds are fairly small and look like little discs with a swelling in the middle. There are lots of them in each seedhead. Image by: wintersown Turtle Heads are perennial wildflowers that produce pink flowers that are shaped like turtleheads. Turtle Heads are often recommended for moist or boggy soil but can also grow and bloom in dry dirt with filtered sun under a tree canopy. Seed collection is easy. Allow the flowers to fade, green pea-shaped pods will form at the base of the flower. At maturity the pods will turn brown and open at the far end. Gather the pods and allow them to dry for a few more days on an open plate. Crumble the pods and puff away the chaff to separate the seeds. Seeds are medium-brown, about an 1/8" across and pointed at their ends.
