What are the basics of a decent tile job, please?
Comments (28)He said he MEANT to "weave" every other tile like he did. What do I know? Is his stage name Pee Wee Herman? In addition, the caulking goes IN PLACE of grout, not OVER it. He needs to score that corner out or the caulking won't stay. As for just grouting the bevels of the tile, If that's truly the case, the grout won't stay. I'm curious-- what did he have to say about the time he spent "placing" that huge gap in the middle of the wall? And what is he doing about it? As for your GC, I also question HIS judgement and expertise if he feels this is a good installation. It might be able to be made acceptable (and that's MAYBE), but BY NO MEANS, is this good work!!...See MoreTell Me True - Would You Accept this Tile Work? Pics attached
Comments (50)I second stw's thoughts...blame Bill LOL Really though, it's a horrible tile job. I've had jobs not as bad removed because of errors, but that job is terrible. Try to explain to DH about your kitchen value. Obviously you've put together a lovely new kitchen, which is great for resale value, but you took a very visual portion of the kitchen and basically wrote grafitti on it. So when you enter the kitchen to buy it...what will you see? The beautiful kitchen or the grafitti...when "F" is written on the wall...your eyes see that first. This is the tile equivilent to "F" written on the wall of a gorgeous kitchen. It's really bad. In addition, it will likely fall off eventually due to the luan...sheesh what a dork. I'd never use him again...I would let a good guy redo an error, but this guy went wrongg on so many levels (alignment, substraight, grout application, caulk application) that you're just going to be throwing good money after bad if you reuse him. I learned that the hard way, trust me, you don't want to let him anywhere near your walls aside from the removal process, and frankly, I wouldn't even allow him to do that in my home. I have to ask...because your kitchen is so gorgeous in all other finish choices....why the shiny white grout? Is there a white element to the kitchen I'm missing??...See MoreHELP! Backsplash contractor did horrible job!
Comments (27)"Angie’s List and Home Advisor are now one and the same. And they charge the contractor for bad leads, with no real recourse. No good contractor wants anything to do with any of those type of referral sites." The Cook's Kitchen - I do not agree. Angie's List charges service providers to advertise on its site, which is different from Thumbtack and Home Advisor which charge a fee to the contractors in order for them to bid a job. On Angie's List, the contractor can choose not to advertise, and will still be listed on Angie's List, and still have consumer reviews for other consumers to see. I've found numerous contractors on Angie's List and have had very good experiences with them. There was only one that wasn't as good as its reviews. I think I've probably used 10 contractors over the years from Angie's List, so 1 in 10 isn't bad odds. Thumbtack contractors seem often to create bad experiences. The number of people with the connections and ability to get good contractor referrals (like you have) is small, especially with new homeowners. Sometimes referrals from neighbors/friends lead to bad experiences. Referrals from relatives are always a bad idea. Not everyone has a designer, or is experienced in knowing signs to look for in a good contractor. Angie's List helps those people....See MoreBathroom Tile Alignment~
Comments (12)Yeah, that's a pretty lousy job and it would definitely bug me too. I can't for the life of me figure out how they got so far off in such a small area if they are all the same size tiles. Anyway, if you do lay a bath mat down to hide it, it would probably be ok . . . maybe . . . It just amazes me how contractors try to get away with such horrible craftsmanship. It really doesn't take that much more time to measure, snap lines, use a square, and do things right. Yet, we see lousy jobs and terrible craftsmanship on this forum everyday. I'm sorry for you and I hope your contractor will get this resolved....See MoreUser
